Penelope Report 18 Apr 2014 16:58

Looking for my Gt. Grandfather William Attridge. Have been searching for several years now and am unable to find anything pre 1891 census. According to subsquent census William was born in Essex, England possibly Brentwood, however, my mother always told me her fathers (my grandfather) family came from Billericay. I have tried all avenues in this direction.
William was born between 1855 and 1857. He married 1883 in Marylebone Jessie Helena Kingston - Occupation Undertakers Coachman, Died November 1918 in Marylebone. William & Jessie had 7 children all of whom survived I have copies of marriage and death certificates. Witness on marriage are connected to Jessie's family so that is no help. Williams fathers name is shown as Charles on the marriage certificate but I have looked at all the Charles Attridges around the relevent dates and can find none with a son William. I am beginign to think William was an orphan and took his name from a family which may have either raised him or adopted him. I know nothing of any siblings. Is there anyone out there who I have not tried who may be able to help me?
Penny

What occupation is Charles on the marriage certificate?

Thank-you

A tree on Ancestry says that he was born 1860, High Easter, Essex with parents Simon Attridge & Sarah Boatman. Also says he died 1918 France & Flanders. Doesn't sound right, surely he was too old to be a soldier in WW1?

Edit: According to CWGC that William was 33 years old and was the son of Mrs. Catherine Attridge, Kings Cottage, High Easter.

Another example of the rubbish trees on Ancestry!

Another tree on Ancestry says he was born 1858, Blackmore, Essex, son of James Attridge & Eliza Knight.
