I am looking for a wedding in Swansea between John Thomas and Elizabeth Thomas I have found Banns on find my past for Wenvoe (which is vale of Glamorgan )
I enquired from Bridgend local history and was told that they were the grooms Banns, the bride was from Swansea and the wedding was there . so I would have to apply there for the records .
I contacted Swansea registry office ,but they have replied that they have done a five year search and cannot find a record of the wedding there .
The Groom was originally from Devon . I have traced his family on the census . There was a wedding in Wenvoe in1852 but the Brides fathers name is different .
to the census.
. Edited this : I originally said that the Grooms fathers name was different it was the Brides father I thought was wrong .

Thanks I'll check on these . there is a difference in john Thomas age on the different census The later census has a 20 year age gap between him and his wife but the earlier census gives different ages

friendlywelshdragon

friendlywelshdragon Report 8 Sep 2015 18:30

the 1881 census gives his age as 80 and hers as 50. 1871 gives ages of 67 and 39 1861 40 and 30 ???

The 11A 632 seems most likely . but they are all the same number

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 8 Sep 2015 19:25

Yes, two couples per record shown on Freebmd at that time

11a 632 is the page number in the Index book at GRO

I think the two couples are

RANDELL Thomas John Swansea
REES Mary Swansea

and

THOMAS Elizabeth Swansea 11a 632
THOMAS John Swansea 11a 632

but you could prove it by looking in the 1861 and 1871 censuses to see if Thomas Randell has a wife called Mary

I can't do it for you as I have to go out.

Re: the Swansea marriage just above - the Glamorgan marriages on FindMyPast show that Thomas John Randell and Elizabeth Thomas married on 19 Sep 1852 at St James', Swansea so you can rule that one out.

You mention in the opening post "There was a wedding in Wenvoe in1852 but the grooms fathers name is different to the census."

What were you expecting the father's name to be? I must admit, I can't decipher the groom's father's name from that Wenvoe record, here's a snip from it:

Tracking that same John Thomas backwards - he seems to have been married to a Rachel on the 1851 census. Possible death for Rachel in 1852.

Do you have any info from that marriage?

I don't have any info on a first marriage but it is possible due to his age.Would he have remarried in the same year as losing his first wife ?
The age is the problem . As there is a difference of 10 years on the 1881 and1861 census I cannot be certain of tracing the right the birth and death,

Sorry, can I just clarify? You said it was the GROOM'S father's name that was different. Also, how do you know Elizabeth's maiden name - is it from one of the children's birth certificates? How do you know the year of marriage?

On some census Elizabeth is shown with birthplace Pembroke.

I've seen people remarry with what some may consider indecent haste but it may have been a case of necessity, especially as the 1851 showed John and Rachel had a daughter.
