Hi - I am eager to discover the parents and any siblings and children of Joseph Cubitt b 1797, (a Stockbroker) who married Catherine Ann Harvey. My findings show that they had two sons, Joseph S 1819 and Samuel 1824, also two daughters Fanny 1818 and Catherine 1822. Prior to my Search of the Cubitt Tree I was given an old handwritten plan of my Ancestors which indicates that the next descendant to Joseph was a Robert William b 1920 who married Anna Arnull. I have established however that Robert William had a brother Richard (born within a year of himself) whose father was George b 1793. I need to clarify how George and Joseph are connected, and as yet have been unsuccessful. Can anyone help?

It this is the same family as the builders 'Cubitt' there is a lot of information about them on the internet.

And I believe at either London Metropolitan Archives or British Library.

In 1841 your Robert William is working in a Drapers shop in Leicester Square while the other Robert is still at home with his parents George and Ann.
Robert William marries Anna and in 1851 he is living in Islington with his wife and children Amelia and Jeannet. He is a draper.

I would like to think that there is no connection between the two although I cannot find a baptism for either Joseph or George.

Hi Chris - whilst the information you gave was very helpful and informative, I am yet again struggling to find any information on the Joseph (unknown middle name) Cubitt who was born in 1797 who became a stockbroker. I can find no records that go back thus far.....are there any? My interest is Joseph's birthplace, parents and siblings. Can you help or point me in the right direction? Many thanks.

Kind Regards
Rita

There is a Freedom of the City Admission Paper for Joseph Cubitt.

Freedom of the City by redemption in the company of Paviors. Payment of 46 shillings and eight pence paid on the 28 March 1820.

A note on the record states 'To be a Stock Broker'

Only one sheet and no further information sadly.

There's a tree on Ancestry with Joseph and a picture of him. It seems he had a brother Sir William Cubbit and this tree goes back to 1515 !!!!!!!

They have his parents as Joseph Cubitt 1765 London Middx and Hannah Lubbock 1770 no place of birth.

They have pictures of Tokenhouse Yard and Founders Court E C 2 signs and a pic of Joseph with a moustache that goes from one ear to the other. No whiskers on his chin.

Rita

Rita Report 28 Jan 2014 18:03

Well MFG, you have been busy! However I still cannot piece the information together. I too saw the picture of Joseph and the amazing moustache looking very distinguished! The trouble is that the Cubitts are very vast and as a result I have wandered off in three directions! (Currently I have three trees or should I say branches). So easily done though, their names were passed down through generations and they are widespread too. On one 'diversion' I had collated information on a Joseph who married Hannah Lubbock and they had a Son, William who was Knighted. He married Abigail Sparkhall and in turn they had a son Joseph in 1811 (who also became a stockbroker) he died in 1872.

Going back further, the Joseph b 1760's parents were Richard 1729 and Martha Temple. Records show that Richard came from a family of Millers in Norfolk (Bacton -Google). There is a link between this family and another, also from Norfolk ,whereby a butcher William Cubitt b 1725 (married Mary Hall) and they had a son Jonathan b 1760. He married Agnes Scarlett.

The relationship between these two families is quoted as being a 'mystery' (Articles on Google confirm) one reference being they were stepbrothers - Joseph and Jonathan that is! Together they received great acclaim in their field of Civil Engineering as a Partnership,.and are responsible for many astonishing fetes. (Makes very interesting reading). I have their descendants listed down to the present day, the last entry being our new Prince George! Seems Camilla P B's Grandmother Maud Marianne Calvert married Henry Cubitt . If I get it wrong I'll end up in the Tower - hearing shouts of 'Off with her head'

So, I need to establish whether this in fact part of my Tree which is why I am pursuing the history of my Joseph 1979 .He I know came from came from London/Middlesex. His parents and any siblings would be a great advantage too. My Grandmother was Elizabeth Mary Ann Cubitt b 1884 Great Granddaughter of the grand looking gentleman in the photograph.

Kind Regards
Rita

Martyn Report 27 Apr 2014 15:17

I have quite a lot on Joseph Cubitt b 1797 Middsx and Robert who did marry Anna Arnull. I am descended from Robert's son Charles. I am having a lot of difficulty tracing Joseph back further as I have found no evidence of his birth in Middlesex nor have I any convincing evidence of who his father was. There is a school of thought which places Joseph Cubitt as a younger son of a Joseph Cubitt of Bacton, Dilham, Norfolk. A more famous son of this Bacton Joseph Cubitt was Sir William Cubitt, the engineer. However this line conflicts with the assertion in both the 1841 and 1851 that my Joseph was baptised (and most probably born) in Middlesex! I will see what I can find on Richard and George
