Hi,

I have an ancestor who was born in Prussia 1860. Her parents were British and her siblings we all born in England, both those older and younger than her. Would it be possible to order a birth certificate for her? Also would it be possible to find out why she was born there?

Thanks :-)

Are the family back in England by 1861?

Are you sure if definitely says prussia and does it say the same on other census's for her?

What was her fathers occupation?

Compulsary registration of births didn't start until 1873. On that basis, her birth may not have been registered in the UK. You may have to try to track down a baptism in either country. See if this link helps http://www.cyndislist.com/categories/#p

Assuming that she was born in Prussia, you'll probably have to try and find out who her father worked for,, or as Jax has asked, see if his occupation gives clues. He may have been posted there for a time.

It says Prussia on every census record she is on apart from one which I think says Germany. All of them say 'British Subject' next to them as well.

I cannot read the father's occupation on the 1861 or 1871 but on the 1881 and 1891 census it says he is an 'Engine Man'.

On the 1871, her father is a Standing Engine Driver at Ironstone Pit

In 1861, it looks as if John was a Leyminder or mender? No idea what that may be!

1901 & 1911 both show Marjery as British subject, born Germany.

I'd be inclined to think that she was born in Germany which was at the heart of the Prussian Empire.

Would it be possible to see if she was baptised in England? If there is no baptism in England, would it be worth looking for a baptism in German records?

Try here for Durham PR
http://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/Parish_Record_Info.php?q=1&cookiecheck=1

Here for German PR
https://familysearch.org/

As German records are held by Canton, if you don't know that, you can't search for the correct archive to approach.

How about asking the Durham Mining museum for help? They may be able to suggest which mining company John worked for, and any company links to Germany.
