Many thanks for your replies, much appreciated.

Rambling Rose:- Thank you. I saw this record, but because of the difference in age I assumed it wasn't him? Can these records be that incorrect? If it is him, do you have any tips on finding out about his parents etc i.e going back further than 1841 census?

Shirley:- Many thanks, that has confirmed the details to me. I had a look on the Family Search site, but again, the only record is on 1861 census, unless of course the dob is incorrect as per Rambling Rose??

safc:- I wasnt sure how theses records work? I saw a list of people, but was confused! How do you know who they married?

Thanks again.

Hi Simon it's not that unusual to find a difference in ages, especially on the 1841 census as they were rounded down to the nearest 5 years, it's still a bit out but I can't see another Emanuel Ferriman.

In case you don't have it this from Ancestry

UK, City and County Directories, 1766 - 1946 about Emanuel Ferriman
Name: Emanuel Ferriman
Occupation: Tailor
Publication Title: 1847 Post Office Directory
County: Oxfordshire
Country: England
Publication Year: 1847

Potty

Potty Report 9 Nov 2014 14:56

Simon, ages in the 1841 census were rounded down to the nearest 5; so he could have been anything from 20 to 25.

You can't really be sure from the list of marriage names who married who but as his wife is shown as Mary in the census a good guess would be that he married Mary Adams but only the marriage cert will confirm this.

As he his your direct relative have you obtained the birth certs for his child who is your great grandfather? This would give the mother's maiden name which would also confirm who Emmanuel married.

Rambling Report 9 Nov 2014 14:58

On that same directory entry it has "Charles Ferriman 'Old George' ( an inn?) and Farmer"

Potty Report 9 Nov 2014 15:07

A tree on Ancestry has his baptism as 24th March 1815; parents Samuel and Mary. Source is given as Parish Records.

Simon

Simon Report 9 Nov 2014 16:12

safc / shirley / potty:- So will the cd of parish records have copies of the actual certificates in order to see marriage/births? Or do you have to go to GRO to get them?
And would that have more info about Samuel and Mary??
Sorry if these questions are silly... I really have no experience of this :-S I do appreciate the help.

Rambling Rose / potty :- Is ancestery a better site to get info?

CDs of parish records normally ( but not exclusively ) have transcriptions of entries not the images themselves.
The OFHS CDs say that they are transcriptions.

Civil registration did not start in England and Wales until Sep 1837. It was not compulsory to register a birth until 1873. Before then we have to hope that our ancestors were baptised and that records have survived.
The parish records are frequently held at the county archive, with films of them sent to local archives and libraries having local studies sections. Any one of those would make a photo copy at your request although they would make a charge.

Civil registration BMD certificates have to be purchased either from the local register office or GRO. There is no option to browse the copies before purchase, only the references needed to order.

Thanks again!

So, if I'm just interested in the details, not the actual certificates, will the info be on the cd's? Or do the certificates hold more details?
Do I just need to go to my local library and see what info they have?

Many thanks

Simon

Cd's usually give basic information such as X marries Y on date and place.
Or baby z baptised on date at place, child of X the father (and if you are lucky Y the mother). Burials usually give name, date & place of burial.

God parents are not usually listed. Your local library may have access to Ancestry or other programs. Unless you are in Oxfordshire you are unlikely to get anything else.
