On his hospital records my great grandfather was listed as 1 of 12 children (9 of whom were still living in 1920)
His mother died in Russia a month after giving birth to an unbaptised child
I thought I'd identified the 10 other names

But a 1920 US census showed his father's 2nd wife down as having 6 children 3 surviving
I already had 3 dead Russian babies with the1st wife . ..so maths no longer added up .
He must have had 18 children altogether So I now have 3 more full siblings and 2 dead half-siblings to find .
This may mean reviving data I'd previously dismissed .possible marriages of siblings + births for their children 1890-1904

Births + deaths of any half siblings may help me pinpoint exactlywhere this family lived in manchester +liverpool 1892-1897 or liverpool 1898-1903...maybe in New york after 1905).

For a couple of subdistricts of Manchester, the mum's maiden surname is available for births pre-1911. Check the local index at:

thanks mgnv ;they don't seem to have any Fellman's any years unless I'm doing it wrong
EDIT my search for this family's manchester connections to their USA counterparts is on a thread on ancestry ";are they siblings "

sorry this was meant to be a general thread i shouldn't have mentioned the name or should have added th link whn i did
I was interested if other people knew that census of living + dead children was supposed to refer to children the couple had between them ; were children had of previous marriages not include in this count
edingobragh feel free to delete your posts from this page before it becomes another F family saga

I have found that children of previous unions were usually not included in the count.

Although the question is asked to married women about "Children born alive to present marriage", this question is often wrongly answered in 3 ways:
1) married men sometimes answer the question - their answers are crossed out by the enumerator, but still visible;
2) widows who are obviously not married women often answer the question - their answers are crossed out by the enumerator, but still visible;
3) couples who had children before the marriage usually include them as children of the present marriage.

I don't have enough experience with the US census to comment on its similar question.

thanks Erin ;found several potentials for my famileies on lancashire BMD once i worked out how to use it . noted refs + now have todecide which to send for .

Mgnv's comments are interesting an extra reason to look at original census not just transcript . I expect it was the same in US
