Robert Report 12 Mar 2015 16:42

I was wondering Is there a list of records that have not yet been transcribed on GR as I have part of a family that is missing from the 1861 census but are there on the 1851 and 1871 census.

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 12 Mar 2015 16:47

GR doesn't transcribe anything

If you look at 1861 on one of the other sites (Ancestry or FMP) which DO transcribe records you will find a list of all the missing pieces

J,

Thanks for your guidance and direction - I have checked FMP, my missing transcriptions are in Halifax, West Riding of Yorkshire --

- which is not shown on the list.

Sorry I now see there are some there - so must be the ones.

Many thanks for your help

Could Jacqueline please save me tearing more of my hair out and explain how she found the lists of missing records.

Thanks

MarieCeleste Report 13 Mar 2015 09:29

Robert - have you checked on other sites (e.g. Ancestry, FindMyPast, FamilySearch) to see if your family come up on there?

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 13 Mar 2015 10:02

Right, namelessone

On FMP.......click on 'search' on toolbar

Then on A-Z of record sets, type in 1861, and select the census option

Scroll down a little - look right

Under 'Useful links and resources', click on the first option.......

hey presto!

Robert, if you post the details of the family, we could take a look - sometimes a second pair of eyes can find what a first can't.

Thanks Jacqueline _ I'll give it a go when I've made a list of who's missing and when.

(I loathe the new FMP - hence the hair pulling :-( )

Use the old search, while it's still available.

Robert ...............

the different sites have transcribed their own records from censuses ........ so it is well worth doing what MarieCeleste suggested

either search yourself on Ancestry, or ask for help on one of the Boards on here.

Lewis (1848) says:
HALIFAX (St. John the Baptist), a parish, partly in the union of Todmorden, but chiefly in that of Halifax, wapentake of Morley, W. riding of York; comprising the market-town and borough of Halifax, the parochial chapelries of Elland and Heptonstall, and the townships of Barkisland, Erringden, Fixby, Hipperholme with Brighouse, Langfield, Midgley, Norland, Ovenden, North and South Owram, Rastrick, Rishworth, Shelf, Skircoat, Sowerby, Soyland, Stainland with Old Lindley, Stansfield, Wadsworth, and Warley;...etc
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/topographical-dict/england

Now, the missing piece is just one of several Haifax subdistrict pieces, and the rego district contains 10 subdistricts in 1861. here are th 1861 piece #s:

HALIFAX RD RG9
Rastrick 3274
Brighouse 3275-3276
Southowram 3277
Halifax 3278-3285
Elland 3286-3288
Ripponden 3289-3290
Sowerby 3291-3294
Luddenden 3295
Ovenden 3296-3298
Northowram 3299-3304

TODMORDEN RD RG9
Hebden Bridge 3230-3232
Todmorden 3233-3237

So were your folks in the Halifax subdistrct in 1851/71, or some other part of Halifax, like Ovenden subdistrict.
Looking at a modern map, I can't tell where one begins and the other ends.
(There's two municipalities adjacent to me with a similar blurring - even the street numbers continue as I cross the boundary; in fact the only clue one has that one's changed municipalities is that one crosses Boundary Rd.)

=================

If one goes to:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
and does an advanced search for all words Halifax & Missing within dept code rg9, one gets:

Registration District 498. HALIFAX
Reference: RG 9/3278
Description:
Registration Sub-District 4 Halifax.
Parish: Halifax (part) (Divided between RG 9/3230-3235 and 3274-3304); Hamlet: Halifax. Nearly all missing.
Date: 1861

Alternatively, if one searches for missing or damaged or decayed in dept codes ho107 (1841/51) or rg9-rg14 (1861-1911 respectively), one gets the following hits:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

year code miss dam dec
1841 ho107 34 4 0
1851 ho107 5 2 19
1861 rg9 853 0 0
1871 rg10 7 0 0
1881 rg11 20 0 0
1891 rg12 63 0 0
1901 rg13 2 0 0
1911 rg14 14 0 0
[some piece # repeated in multiple categories; also, some missing vessels in port repeated in multiple pieces]

One could also do a basic search for rg9/3278

Robert Report 15 Mar 2015 17:31

Wow I'm amazed at your search abilities. Yes they were in Southowram 1 border is with the Halifax town center.
I can't check further now as I am away from home.
Thanks again for all your help.
