I know that most people do, but it bears repeating

I've been helping someone today, and have found the following

CORRECT surname of wife/mother is ELLERSHAW

The marriage is transcribed as Ellenshaw

Children's births are recorded with MMN...............

Ellershaw, Ellirshaw, Elisha and Helisher

great advice jacqueline ...it's good to be reminded of this sort of thing

I think the worst example I ever had was following the Hallis family .

..sometimes transscribed as Hollis Halles Harris

..the missing year was when a census had them as Wallace

mind you i'd never had tried that alternative ...only found through a mother-in-law residing with them
.

One of my Dartnell family from Deptford London went to Chatham in Kent to work at the docks . The male family members were barge builders on the river Thames .

He married in the late 1870 ,s and I found them on the census after but couldn't find the marriage . Another same family researcher put me in the right direction. His name was down as Dartner and hers as Etterley , her actual surname was Hettreley , both signed the cert with an X

Guess the accents paid a part and the vicar wrote it as he heard it

This also happens with christian names.

My step grandmother birth reg shows as Myra, death cert as Mara and she was know as Morah and sometimes even Moira.

So do not rule out any spelling.
