Just wondered if anyone could help
I am researching Mary Ann Skellett 1874 born in Durham but moved to Bradford 1900ish.She married a James W Cunliffe and I am trying to connect him to the well known Cunliffes and Listers
There is a James born in Armley, Leeds and one born in Shipley which is Bradford
i am getting myself in knots trying to work this one out
Any help would be great
Julie
Ps they are down as Cuncliffe on the 1911

Kucinta Report 22 Jun 2015 20:43

This record gives you his father's name:

Name: Mary Ann Skellett
Birth Year: abt 1877
Age: 21
Marriage or Bann Date: 5 Nov 1898
Parish: Bradford, St Peter (Bradford Cathedral)
Father's name: Charles Skellett
Spouse's Name: William James Cunliffe
Spouse's Father's Name: Samuel Cunliffe<<<<<<<<<<<<

The image of the marriage register says the groom's father is Samuel Cunliffe, a deceased stationmaster, which should help you find the family in censuses.

You also know that the 'J' in the groom's name is James.

I can't quite make out the groom's occupation, it looks like wollen willeyer, and he is a bachelor aged 23 years, of 76 Kerslean/Kersham St, Bradford.

The bride is a 21 yr old spinster, a worsted twister by occupation, her address is 76 Peace St Bradford.

The bride's father Charles Skellett is a stone (?) quarrier.

The witnesses were William Hey and Sophis Skellett

Thank you very much --- I will look into Samuel

HI,

I think I was editing with more detail of the marriage register as you posted, just in case anything else on there helped identify the families concerned.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 22 Jun 2015 20:56

????

Name: James William Cunliffe
Birth Date: 21 May 1875
Parish: Horton, All Saints
Baptism Date: 7 Jul 1875
Father's name: Samuel Cunliffe
Mother's name: Eliza Annie Cunliffe

EDIT - have just realised forenames are the wrong way round, and father is a clerk, though could be a railway clerk I suppose . Address 23 Tudor Street. Born 21st May 1875.

Will leave for a bit, but might be a red herring.

Edit:

Just in case these are the parents, this is the marriage for them:

Name: Samuel Cunliffe - clerk
Birth Year: abt 1848
Age: 26
Marriage or Bann Date: 21 Dec 1874
Parish: Bradford, St Peter (Bradford Cathedral)
Father's name: James Cunliffe - shuttlemaker
Spouse's Name: Annie Elizabeth Carling
Spouse's Father's Name: William Carling

Groom's address is 23 Tudor Street, Horton, as per the baptism for James William Cunliffe.

Just noted that in the 1911 census, and the 1901 posted by alviegal, he is James William, not William James, so maybe that puts the baptism I posted back in the running?

Depending on where Horton, All saints is, in Yorkshire:

1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census

Thank you everyone for all this
Just one thing though -- the 1911 says he was born in Wortley and the 1901 says he was born in Shipley --- this is giving me a headache lol

Not sure if this is relevant, but might explain why hard to find in census?

Name: Samuel Cunliffe
Birth Year: abt 1848
Parish: Shipley, St Paul
Burial Date: 30 Nov 1876
Burial Age: 28

EDIT: Ooooh, given what alviegal has just posted, this could work, and leaves his missus free to marry Mr Donohue...

This appears to be his father, Samuel. Jane could be the aunt mentioned in James' Admission record in 1891.

Hmm, so the railway clerk becomes the station master on the marriage cert!

Railway clerk does seem more in line with the clerk that Samuel was on his marriage, and on the baptism register of his son.

But it wouldn't be the first time someone overegged things on a marriage cert.
