Tips for Finding a Medical Professional Ancestor

Hi all,

Can anyone help a newbie...please?

Does anyone have any tips for finding a 20th Century (Born 1905) Doctor/Surgeon in or around Edinburgh from approx. 1930 onwards?

I have been researching my wife's family tree for a month, with a lot of success.

I am, however, totally stumped with her Grandfather's brother. The family tells us he was a Surgeon in or around Edinburgh from the 1930's. I have found his birth record from 1905 (Edinburgh), his Marriage record from 1935 (Occupation Medical Practitioner, living in Edinburgh) and from this point he and his wife are a mystery to me, as is the daughter the family mention.

I have checked the usual suspects; GenesReunited, Ancestry.co.uk & Scotlandspeople.gov.uk but have hit a wall. I can't find a list of previous members of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (nor their Physicians and Surgeons counterpart in Glasgow) either.

Any help will be gratefully received.

Thank you

Graeme

Did you specifically look in the UK Medical Directories 1859-1959 on Ancestry? Its not clear if it covers Scotland, or only England/Wales.

Medical Practitioner sounds more like a GP than a Surgeon.

As to their disappearence - have you considered they may have emigrated, or that he was conscripted into the medical corp for WW2?

Have you tried newspapers?

Do you have a name for him?

Welcome to the boards, Graeme.

Try contacting the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh ( as opposed to Surgeons):

https://www.rcpe.ac.uk/library-archives/services-visiting-us#quick

or their library / archives:

http://archives.rcpe.ac.uk/CalmView/default.aspx

They might be able to help, or at least advise.

In particular, try "persons search" on the left-hand menu on that last link I gave.

Thanks for the help everyone :-)

+++DetEcTive+++, the Medical Register has released enough facts to start the hunt again, turns out the family moved to Dumfries, I now have an address and can confirm the daughter's name (have even seen a webpost she's made in 2013).

Thank you all for being so supportive.

Cheers

Hope it works out for you - just remember that not everyone is as interested in their family's history as we are ;-)
