If a person was in certain occupations they didn't have to go to war. What was this know as/called? .........occupations

It was called reserved occupation

My dad worked at the Woolwich Arsenal he was a shell turner on my birthday cert pre 1940

He tried to join up but was refused as he was on essential war work

My dad didn't serve either. He was a toolmaker to trade.
He was exempt because worked on Aircraft Engines.

I don't know if he attempted to join up but ,I expect he would have been refused due to a chronic, recurring health issue contracted in his childhood. ( Osteomyelitis)
