I am fairly new at this family tree thing, but I am getting there and I have found family that I didn't know about and I have found photos.
What I cannot find is the marriage between my great grandfather, Henry Appleton born c1852 at Appleton Wiske Yorkshire (near Middlesbrough) and his wife Emma, she was Emma Bagnall born c1863 in Leeds. They appear in the 1891 census as man and wife,
but I cannot find any evidence of marriage. Henry died around 1898 and Emma was quick off the mark and she married William Buckton around 1900, he died around 1905 and she remarried again to Robert Myers..She was like a black widow spider!
She died in 1930 and she was still Emma Myers.
Anyone got any info on the marriage with Henry as it is doing my crust in trying to find it. :-S

Robert ..................

welcome to the Boards, and to this fascinating but often frustrating hobby :-)

If I may give you one tip .........

the best site to begin looking for births, marriages and deaths between July 1 1837 and about 1970-ish is the free site

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

then just follow instructions

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Apr 2016 21:32

I see from the 1891 Census that the eldest child George was born ca 1882 in Middlesborough

This is the only Freebmd listing for a George Appleton born in Middlesborough ca 1882. It means his birth was registered in the quarter ending in March, and he could have been born any time between mid-November 1881 and end of March 1882 as the mother had 6 weeks to register a birth ............

Births Mar 1882 (>99%)
Appleton George Henry Middlesbro' 9d 552

Do you know if this is the correct George?

If so, it means that Henry and Emma probably married soon after the Census in 1881, as Henry is shown as Unmarried on that census, although he is living in Linthorpe, Middlesborough

Of course, they may never have married at all :-)

Thanks for your swift replies on this, and yes it is a fascinating a extremely frustrating subject.
Thanks for the info on Emma, particularly the info on her parents and sisters. I will try and follow her side one day, at the moment I am trying to follow the Appleton line, I have got back to a John Appleton c1777 and hit a brick wall.
As for Emma I can only conclude that she may or may not have married Henry, would it be normal for her to take the Appleton name and use them on census forms?
Their oldest son was George Henry and he was born In Middlesbrough c1882, he married Charlotte Ann Winskill and they lived in Sheffield where they had four children.

"would it be normal for her to take the Appleton name and use them on census forms?"

Absolutely, if only for to appear respectable.
Although not necessarily in this case, many husbands/wives parted and took up with someone else as they couldn’t afford a divorce.
A vicar or registrar takes what he is told at face value. In the instance of the baptisms or birth registrations, he won’t have asked to see a marriage certificate. The same would apply for additional marriages. Quite a few members have discovered bigamous marriages even though the living spouse lived in the same area.

I think at least as many people lived common-law back then as do now ........... proof of marriage or death usually did not have to be provided!

I think I have the right John Appleton c1777, he married Jane?
They had a son George born c1811, they probably had more kids but this is as far as I have got. Like I said I am new at this sort of thing.
George married Margaret Carter in Warrington so that puts them in the right area if John was from the North West.
I could of course be completely wrong :-)
