Has anyone found and used a service for transcribing hand writing on Certificates

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 20 Nov 2016 17:13

I haven't but plenty of people on Genes used to help each other with transcripts of writing on old certificates (although there are not so many people using the message boards these days).

If you have any certificates that you can't read you could upload them into your "Keepsafe" and make the image public so anyone can see it. Add a link here so that we can see the images and someone will try to help I'm sure.

I have pm'd Eric as I am willing to have a go at disyphering it.

Eric

Eric Report 23 Nov 2016 11:10

I have a few certificates could you tell me what pm'd is

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 23 Nov 2016 12:26

PM means private message.

Click on Mel's name at the top of her post, and fill in the form which appears.
She will receive your message by email via GR, and it will not show up on this thread.
You can attach a file/document to your PM, as you would to an email.

She says she has PM'd you, so there should be an email for you via GR - perhaps in your Junk Mail ??

I'm also willing to have a go at deciphering it.

Or you can do as Kath has suggested, and upload the image of the certificate(s) to "Keepsake" here on GR, then paste the link to it/them here on your thread. Then all the potential helpers can see it/them and have a look - not just one or two seeing it privately.

Thank you so much I did not expect all this information.
It will take me some time to go through but at first glance it looks like the marriage is in the wrong place. My Lane family are in Warwickshire. But I may have mist one.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 27 Nov 2016 18:23

If it's the Lane family you're researching, then we should be following Charlotte's first husband William Lane, who died between 1866 and 1871. Charlotte herself was only a Lane by marriage

This seems the most likely possibility for his death:

Deaths Mar 1870 (>99%)
Lane William 29 Cheltenham 6a 360

He was apparently still alive at his son Matthew's christening in 1867 - at least the christening record doesn't say otherwise.

The son Matthew was born June qr 1967:

LANE, MATTHEW WILLIAM FARDRY Order
GRO Reference: 1867 J Quarter in CHELTENHAM Volume 06A Page 399

According to William & Charlotte's marriage record, at the time of the marriage he was living in the Parish of Prestbury, and his father was a builder named Matthew.

This will be his baptism - Matthew was a bricklayer:

For William's occupation, it says "Formerly mason", and says he was born Castle Morton, Worcestershire. Maybe some of his father's details entered in the wrong place ??

So these Lanes are not from Warwickshire, unless further back.

Thank you again I am sorry this turned out to be a wild goose chase.

From the original Certificate 1888 I read the age as 39 on the 1891 census under Charlotte Parkes she is age 40.

From your research and mine the only marriage is the one you found on the BT's for Charlotte Fawdry is 22nov 1866 this states that Charlotte and William were both of full age, But Charlotte would only be 15/17.

So I think there is no connection between the two Marriages.

In conclusion the Lane Family I have back to 1689 are all in Worcester And Warwickshire. 2 William Lanes one would have been 51 in 1866 the other would have been 43 there father was also William.
