Christine Report 12 Feb 2017 23:06

I am coming back to family research after a long break - current life had got in the way and I had already got quite a substantial tree established. However, there was one ancestor that I thought we would never be able to name. My grandmother was the first of two illegitimate children born to my Great - Grandmother (who was living away from home in service) before she went on to marry someone else altogether. We knew absolutely nothing about the father(s) and my GG and G Aunt were brought up by their grandparents.

A couple of weeks ago, we were watching WDYTYA and the subject also had an unknown Great-Grandfather. The researcher then found a newspaper report where he was being sued for maintainance of the child. Now, I'm sure that most of you would have known to look in the newspaper archives, but this wasn't a resource that was freely available back when I was searching, and the possibility hadn't occurred to me.

Having spent a very short time at it, I found not only my Great-Grandfather, but my Great-Aunt's father too (yes, there were two of them). I can't believe my luck and it has set me off again!
