Some counties are starting to put details of their registration information on line past the 1901 cut off on freebmd. e.g. for Cheshire go to http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/ New information is being added every month. I managed to find details of my great grandparents marriage in 1924 and my great grandmothers birth in 1902. Once you have found who you are looking for you can then order the relevant certificate to trace back another generation. You will need to have at least a vague idea of the year and also first name to do this.
