I had a silver cross cream and burgundy pram with the big wheels in 1958 for my daughter. My mum and Dad bought it.M.i.l.and f.i.l bought the carry cot bath and stand.
Same pram was used for son, born in 1961.Funnily enough he has just celebrated his 50th and I sent him an e-mail attachment of him in his pram for the grandchildren to have a laugh at.
There was nothing like a lovely coach built pram that you could leave them to sleep in outdoors and be so comfy.I also agree that you should have your baby facing you.Don't like these buggys at all.

Running Bear those wheels were great for building trolleys

I had a pram with big wheels when I was a baby. My brother 7 years older wanted to take me for a walk. Against mums better judgement she let him.

He took me to the park where there was a small hill.Pushing me to the top he let go. Went back home with the wheels buckled. Not sure what state I was in lol

I had a second-hand Silver Cross pram for my children when babies, I was even able to purchase the correct braid which was available in those days.

I always longed for a lovely dolly pram when I was young, so when my granddaughters were born I decided to splash out on a twin dolls pram for each of the girls. I found two in a sale on the web. One is blue and white, the other cream and white. Although they are not really suitable for little ones to play with until they are three years old as they are quite heavy, we did take a photograph of each of the babies in their own dolly pram when they were newborn. They even have matching pram bags.

I have plenty of time to hand-stitch the patchwork quilts, sheets and pillows before they are old enough to enjoy them. I don't believe in spoiling children but I'm thinking it's the one toy I am going to spoil them with!

My silver cross pram was bottle green, with a child seat on it when our second one arrived. My sister also used it later for her daughter, and then it went to a friend who used it for her 3 children.
When I was six I had a childs siver cross for my dolls and it was silver/grey.
Every week when my mum cleaned my baby sisters coach built pram and took the wheels of etc. I did the same with mine. it was immaculate even after 5 years. Then my mum persuaded me to give it to some children across the road because they didnt have much money so reluctantly I did.
They wrecked it, I was heartbroken.
I now have one for the grandchildren and would love a babies silver cross pushchair for our grandchild due next January. I have looked on internet but no luck. :-(

Have you seen where a lot of stars are buying Silver Cross coach built prams

Unless anybody knows differently Sylvia, it would appear that the Silver Cross pushchairs don't really resemble the type that we have in mind. They are just a modern-type stroller. It's a bit sad really and a shame that there isn't the choice available. Hope I'm wrong!

Do you remember the old Maclaren blue and white stripped seat buggies ?

one sold recently on Ebay for £272

they are now collectors items

hands up who threw one away.

I have been stopped a few times by chaps saying

"scuse me missis can I have your wheels to make a trolley"

I looked on the site Lavender and they do smaller prams which can turn into pushchairs, you know the kind where the foot part drops down. That's what my old one was like and also the newer one which I bought more recently just in case my son decides to settle down and start a family any time soon.

I think they were around £500+

Wish I still had mine, that's for sure.

Hang on to them if you have them.

Lavender, you can understand why I grabbed that pushchair for a tenner, when I had the chance. If my son doesn't get to need it, I would sell it then I suppose but there is plrnty of time for him to start a family and use it altho I will be a crotchety old dear if he doesn't get a move on!

I just googled Silver Cross - still making the coach built prams - prices appear to be around £1000 and up.

Coach built prams are enormous. Modern houses, unlike Uncle Bill's, don't have room to keep one. Where do you keep your collection?

The 70's Wilson's ,Silver Cross and Marmet are all in the attic as the body detaches from the carriage

The 40's 50's and 60's leather strap Osnath's ,London Baby Coach , Marmet Silver Cross . Royale and Millsons are in 2 garages

There are 3 dolls prams on the spare bedroom

In the dining room I have a London Baby Coach for everyday use and 3 dolls prams which the grandchildren use.

In the shed are 2 prams in the "I'm going to fix them up stage"

On the garden is a small white tin pram with a pink flowered plastic hood that my youngest granddaughter uses as her shopping trolley.

I have just come back from a car boot with a carry cot and transporter

Who remembers putting the carry cot on the back seat of the car with the baby in . No seat belts in those days .

I still have my Marmet pram Quoy.

If and when i can persuade someone to climb up into the rafters of the garage and fetch it down for me, i will take a photo and put it on here.

It was in great condition when i put it up there........but i am a bit concerned now.
I have just looked at the silver frame and there appears to be quite a few flecks of rust on it!! Boo hoo!!

It was my pride and joy! :-)

Quoy

Quoy Report 16 Oct 2011 14:03

the curse of chrome

when you do get it down clean the chrome with fine grade wire wool and soapy water this should bring it back up to nice and shiny again.

Make sure you dry it thoroughly .

Before you put it back lather the chrome with Vaseline this will stop any more rust.

Which model Marmet is it ?

PricklyHolly

PricklyHolly Report 16 Oct 2011 16:02

Thankyou for that Quoy.
I don't know the exact model. It is brown with a cream interior.
It looks quite similiar to the purple one in your picture.

I've got the frame down and just wheeled it round the garden a couple of times!! :-D
