My greatgreatgreat great grandfather was a sergeant in the 84th of Foot regiment. In the 1841 census it states he was born in Lancashire. I have traced a Sergeant George Taylor of this regiment but he was born in Almondbury. I am certain this is him. How can I prove this? George Taylor was pensioned out of the army. This gentleman born in Almondbury was also pensioned out. According to an old newspaper cutting my George was captured by the French, escaped back to England and became a recruiting officer in Rochdale. I am doing my family history in book form and just want to be as accurate as I can be. I would appreciate any guidance thank you Barbara

If you know where and when he died, there are pension payment records at the National Archives (not online) which should give date of admission to pension, so, assuming you know the date for George of Almondbury, should rule him in or out. These records only go up to 1862 or so, though.Have you found any discharge records for your George on FMP? Also, if you have a fairly accurate date of your George's discharge, you could search TNA references WO116 and WO117, (the ref depends on whether he was discharged due to illness or injury, or whether he was discharged due to length of service)which you can download for free from the TNA website. They should give place of birth and a brief summary of service

Thank you for your help. I have just noticed Genes as brought some records on line today. I went many years ago to Kew and was unsuccessful. I have got the George from Almondbury discharge details so this afternoon I will be on Genes again thank you xx

George died in Rochdale on the 14th July 1844. I don't know his date of discharge. I have got this copy of George from Almondbury. He was discharged due to illness. Any help you can give me will be very much appreciated.

As you know his date of death, I'd suggest that the Pension payment records I mentioned should be searched. They aren't online, though- you'd have to go to Kew or get someone to go for you. The reference is WO22. There's nothing specifically for Rochdale but perhaps it comes under Manchester - there are 2 different areas described as Manchester, but no explanation in the online Catalogue to say exactly which areas they cover, so they would both have to be looked at

The newspaper clipping was in 1906 but mentioned as being the grandfather of someone who had died. It wasn't Georges death in the paper xx

INTERESTING ASSOCIATIONS WITH ROCHDALE...

(mentioned at end of above, the following piece)

It may be mentioned that his grandfather in the mother's side was Sergeant George Taylor of the 84th Regiment who "fought with the Duke of York in Holland, Flanders and France in the years 1794-5-6. Their regiment had killed and starved to death for their country between eight and nine hundred men".
He was taken prisoner in France, but escaped to London and became a recruiting sergeant in Rochdale. There he died in 1844, aged 79 years, and was buried in St. Mary's Churchyard.
