This was my grans Father. My gran was born illegitimate in 1886 Kingston Surry. Her Mother Ellen Upfield pretended to be a widow using his name. She reg the birth of baby Charlotte as his surname too. This is why I have spent years n years not finding her anywhere. I was always looking for Charlotte Ethel Upfield.
Charlotte ended up with Dr barnardos and was sent to Canada aged 9 as Charlotte Ethel UPFIELD.
I have been waiting for her barnardos file for over a year and it arrived 2 days ago. WITH A PHOTO OF HER AGED 6!!!! Very exciting.
Her file tells me her father was in the east surry reg and was most likely to be in India at the time of childs birth 1886.
Now for my question.......
What was the British army doing around that time and would they have been in India? He supposedly supported them during the mothers confinement.

Thanks in advance for any ideas

According to Google the 1st Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment were based in India between 1881 and 1903 so it is possible that he was in India at some point between those dates:-

Hi Kath long time no see
I was myself just playing around with Google and found a pic of the regiments Barracks.....3 guesses where?

Kingston upon Thames! that's where Charlotte was born. Maybe he was the one that found her lodgings to give birth.
This is great as it makes him more real and not Mr pretend lol
Many thanks Kath x

Ps just an added note to say that the father was never seen or heard of again after the birth.

Thanks Malyon love your dog.

That one about Herbert is the best one so far. Don't know why I cant find him on census, maybe i'ts because of being in the Army. Maybe he really did go to India.

Ellen was in service before and after Charlottes birth. Her file gives her Brothers and Sisters also her Father William<<Born FROLE Hampshire. Ag Lab and all were poor.
Ellen was seduced by Herbert (barnados words not mine) While she was in service.
She was in service in Devonport when she was seduced then did a runner to Kingston Surry to give birth at a house run by Mr and Mrs Baker. Ellen left the child there as a 'Nurse child' and went back to work saying she was a widow Ellen Giles.
Ellen worked for a Mrs Elliston an aged lady. She lived in Richmond but moved to Plymouth taking Ellen with her. Whenever Mrs Elliston Visited Kingston she would always look in on the child Charlotte.
She was not at all favourably impressed with Mrs Baker or the appearance of the home or family. Ellen was very worried that Mrs Elliston should find out her deception (not married)Mrs Elliston was very kind to Ellen.

As far as I can make out Charlotte stayed there for almost 5 years before being removed to Stepney receiving house then on to Girls village in Barkingside. then off to Canada.

Her Brothers and Sisters are hard to find but I have found one, a Caroline upfield who was deaf and dumb. Sent for birth also death cert. Born and died in Guildford.b1869-d1923.
The Mother Ann had died and they had a step mum Harriett.

Ellens wages were £15 per annum and she paid Mrs Baker 15/- a month for the care of Charlotte. Ellen was quite ill during her confinement and after birth but Mrs Ellistion employed a charwoman to do the heavy work so Ellen diddnt have to do it.
What a lovely lady!
These are the names on the file...

Ellen Upfield (alias Giles) 32
Herbert C Giles reputed father abt 30 Soldier in east surry reg.
Ellens Father William72 ag lab Rosvell Farm Godlming.

Brothers
William 32 Soldier
James 30
Richard 28 farm labs Godalming

Ellens Sisters
Jane Harms 50 Husband Gardner Farnham.
Elizabeth Upfield 27
Mary Tedler 40 Husband carter. Guildford.
Harriett Upfield 36 Servant Farnham
Margaret Upfield 35
caroline Upfield 24 deaf and dumb.
Annie Upfield 23 Servant.

Unsure when these ages come from but Charlotte went to Barnandos in 1892. This is I think when this record was made.

Please don't think i'm asking you all to find this lot for me, I just wanted to share and it helps me to write it all down. Her photo as a 6 year old has pride of place in my home.
She was my Grama and she is the image of my Grandson! 2 peas in a pod.
