Pete Report 25 Nov 2016 12:56

I am looking for any information on 1057912 Sergeant William Oates RAFVR who lost his life on the 15/12/1941 in Hampden AT133 EQ-X 408 Squadron RCAF, in a bombing operation over the docks in Cherbourg. According to the Squadron ORB the aircraft left RAF Balderton at 00.30 hrs on the 15/12/1941 and nothing more was heard. His name along with those of his crew mates are on the Runnymede Memorial.
This was his first operational trip.
His age and next of kin are what I am looking for but any other information is most welcome.
Thanks Pete

You will find his age and next of kin if you order his service records from the MOD.

Cost is £30.

This will tell you how to go about ordering them:-

Brtishnewspapers Newcastle Journal 12th Jan 1943. have an articial in which Wm Oates is mentioned,

The Rev Spencer Wade Rector of Whalton Morpeth wrote a hymn,

For those that Fly.

with it comes a tribute to.

in tender &affectionate memroy of our dear Bill.who gave his life while bombing Cherbourg 15Dec 1941.Bill was the Rectors nephew ,Sergeant-Observer Wm Oates came from Ladysmith to Skerry College in Newcastle and with the Rectors son joined the RAF.

this may help define the family?

Skerrys College was located in Ellison Place..Newcastle.
