Hello

Could someone please help me find the birth, brothers and sisters and parents of James Coats born 27-12-1786, in East Kilbride.

on the 1841 James and his wife Janet (nee thomson born 1789c) --married 19 feb 1809 at East Kilbride,-- were living at East End, East Kilbride with all 12 of their children.

I have no idea when he died but i do know that Janet died on 14 March 1850 at East End.

On the Cenuses there is another James Coats living next door in Dykehead with his family.
Both James's are roughly the same age, so could possibly be cousins?

The Coats of Dykehead/East End/Paisley seem to all be related, but i can't seem to see the link.

A fresh pair of eyes would be most welcome.

Thanks
Carol

I had a look at the 1841 census for the two James Coats.

The 'other' James and wife Margaret....and all their children....among whom is a Marion.

Think this may be the parents of this particular James (not yours)

James Coats and Marion Graham
Married: 11 June 1786
East Kilbride

Just out of interest, where did you find the date of birth for your James Coats (27 - 12 - 1786) ?

Helen

Helen Report 20 Jan 2009 18:28

Think this may be the marriage for:

James Coats and Margaret Wilson
7th July and 10th July 1810
East Kilbride

This is a submitted record from the IGI....so is not to be relied on entirely.

However, it seem odd that there seems to be a definite date......almost as if someone had seen it recorded somewhere.

The children recorded on the 1841 census, definitely belong to a couple called James Coats and Margaret Wilson.

Again, the childrens births are all submitted records....but....they are definite dates of birth.

Where did the submitter get this information ?

Hi

Thanks very much for looking. I have traced the coats side up through my mum, and following birth, marraige and death certs arrived at James Coats marrying Janet Thomson ( i have that cert from Old parish reg on Scotlands people). Incidently Janets father was William Thomson of Carseugh.

As far as i can figure out, the other James married a Margaret Wilson.

The odd thing is the 2 james's kids are all similar names, the farms are next door to each other (if you can call it that!) and even the will they left their wives are very similar.

I got my James Coats date of birth 27-12-1786 and Janet fathers name from Sirntet geneology site.

I can't find the parents for James as old parish reg don't give you enough information.

I still think there is a link somewhere between east end/dykehead/paisley/east kilbride... but just can't see it.

Thanks

Carol

I had a look on Scotlandspeople index and there is note of a birth for:

James Coats
1789
East Kilbride.

There is an outside chance this may be your James.

Not sure if you know about this already.

This is NOT the other James as I checked using his parents names of James Coats and Marion Graham.

Thanks very much, i will dig around and see what i can find out about James 1789. Its a bit odd that both familes live next door and the children all have similar names...

If you can find their deaths, in Scotland, after 1854 you will get their parents' names.

Hello

I found under Wills a testament for James dated 16th January 1861 ... so presume he died before this.

stil can't find a death cert for him, or the other James.. (although confusingly enough this James has also left a Will)

Both James's leave all their bits and bob to their respective wives and surviving children....

but stumped .. still can't find a death cert for either of them..

sigh

Mwahh xx

thank you thank you thank you...

I had never gone into that death cert for jame coats in 1860.. i had seen it but was put off as it had age U on the front bit.... i assumed that was a child's death...

Now.. the task is, is to see if William that married Margaret had a brother, who then had a son and called him james .. and maybe that james could be the james of dykehead.

The fact that they called their first son James could mean that Williams dad is also james...

Fingers, toes and eyes crossed

Carol
