I'm trying to find birth year for Rose Hannah Arter, born in Birmingham, so i can order her birth certificate, but the sources I have point to different birth years.
1901 census records her as 16, so birth year around 1884/5
She married my great grandfather Henry Deeley in 1954, aged 70 (according to the marriage certificate) so birth year around 1884/5
Her death is recorded in 1966, aged 84, so birth year around 1882.
I've searched through the 1880s on GReunited, and cannot find any Rose Hannah Arter born. FreeBMD also produces no results. Could it be that her birth wasn't registered?
I'd be very grateful for any suggestions...
If it helps, she married Frank Brooke in 1906

Have you found her in all possible censuses?

What is her age on her marriage to Frank Brooke?

That's helpful Maureen.

I'd be inclined to "ignore" the age on the death cert. The other records are a little closer to the birth date and are more likely to be correct.

Wonder if she was an Hannah by birth ... ?

Hi

Just taken a look at the 1891 Census I'm sure it reads Rose and has been transcribed as Ross.

Hi Jill,
I don't have the certificate for that marriage yet. Just going by FreeBMD.
1911 census has her as 26 yrs old, pointing to 1884/5 birth year.

Hi

Does it give her fathers name on the marriage certificate?

There's something a little off here,I think. If she's the Rose with sister Fanny and mother Jane in 1891,then Jane also appears as a widow in 1881. Hmm.

Thanks for all the info so far - didn't think of trying Ross as a possibility!

On the marriage cert from 1954 her father is down as Jim Arter

Can't see any Rose Hannah's for 1882 - 1885 for Birmingham, that might fit the bill.

I'm now trying Rosanna's in Warwickshire.

FreeBMD is taking its time though!

Rosanna - 1882-1885 Birmingham - again, nothing obvious.

It won't let me do Warwickshire - overloads the system and you get one of those "too busy" messages.

I'm posting a completely mad suggestion.

Going by the birth reg district for Fanny - and by the surnames listed with Rose and her mum in the 1891:-

Births Dec 1882 (>99%)
Silvester Rose King's N. 6c 457 Scan available - click to view

Probably completely wrong, but ...

Craig

Craig Report 8 Jan 2010 14:51

Carter, yes, never thought of that. It's possible.
Jane Arter was born in Sedgbury, Staffordshire, as was West Brom.

Craig

Craig Report 8 Jan 2010 15:17

Just found this in 1881 census

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
John HILLS Head M Male 67 London, Middlesex, England Milk Seller
Emma HILLS Wife M Female 31 Lindridge, Hereford, England Laundress
Arthur J.E. HILLS Son Male 16 m Kings Norton, Worcester, England
Jane ARTER Lodger W Female 36 Sedgborough, Worcester, England Charwoman
Mary Jane ARTER Lodger Daur Female 7 Denston, Derby, England
Fanny ARTER Lodger Daur Female 1 Kings Norton, Worcester, England

Looks like Jane could've been from Sedgborough and not Sedgbury, different counties, just very weird that she's recorded as a widow 4 years before Rose Hannah's birth
