Casey007 Report 31 Oct 2010 12:01

Hi All,
I am desperately trying to find any info on my Maternal Grandmother, listed on my Mother's Birth Cert. as 'Bessie BARCOE'.
Apart from a Death Cert. showing a female allegedly married to my Maternal Grandfather, Edward STILL, ( although I can not find any record of him marrying anyone in the time period), which shows that She died on 17 May 1923 that is all I can find. This person died shortly after giving birth to my mother so she can not throw any light on the subject since she never knew her and was brought up in an orphanage,(her Father being 'Too busy' to bring her up himself).
As I say, ANY INFO AT ALL would be greatly appreciated, not only by me but by my mother as well.
Many Thanks.
Ken COOTE

Could the surname have been put down wrong on the Birth Certificate? Allowing for accents.

Casey007 Report 31 Oct 2010 14:09

Hi EVERYBODY,
WOW!!! I'm sorry if it takes me so long to reply but I'm only a one finger typist and not very fast and if I'm honest I didn't expect SO MANY replies SO QUICKLY! It took a little while to read through all the replies and I am also at work and keep getting interrupted. (No consideration some people!)
I have seen the 'VERCOE' details before but had passed them over as the name on my mother's Birth Cert. seems to be very clear 'BARCOE' but I might give it another closer look now since so many of you have pulled it up.
Mother's name is Dorothy May and was born in district of Lambeth 22 May 1922 and still going strong! One piece of info that she does vaguely remember is that BESSIE came from BIDEFORD, N. Devon, which is not a million miles from the VERCOE connection and also with Ginny's info about a possible 'brother' for Mum. She always believed She was an only child.
Please don't all rush at once but is there anything else I can fill you in on? remembering my dexterity and situation! I only hope I have pushed all the right buttons to send this spiel.
Regards Ken.
