Beaumonts of yorkshire: From one numerous places named Beaumont (ie beautiful hill). It is usually assumed therefore, that the Huddersfield family derived its name from somewhere in Normandy, but there are other possibilities, including Beaumont in Lancashire. The Beaumonts acquired their substantial holdings in and around Huddersfield around 1200 and by 1545 the surname was numerous, with particular concentrations in the Almondbury parish. Crosland was where the gentry family settled initially, before living at Whitley Hall, and much of the ramification took place from there.
