I’m stuck on finding the origins of my mum's grandmother. She was Mary Brown born 1848 - 1851 in Wapping/Ratcliffe/Limehouse, the daughter of James, a Waterman according to her marriage certificate. She married James Chattaway (born 1848) only in 1890 after at least 8 children and 20 years together. She died 31 Aug 1915 at 18, Cornwall Street, Shadwell.
In the 1901 and 1911 censuses her sister Ellen Brown is shown living with her at 18, Cornwall St. Ellen Brown (born 1860 - 1862 in St. Georges/Ratcliffe) is blind and chronically destitute having been in the Stepney Union Workhouse since at least 1877-78. She’d been in Guy’s Hospital for an unsuccessful operation and was discharged blind. The 1889 workhouse records show that Ellen has three sisters, Mary (Ann) mentioned above, Hannah, (living at Tenbury Place, Poplar, who applied for medical relief in 1879 – that’s all we know about her) and Eliza(beth).
Ellen’s sister Elizabeth, born about 1849 in Limehouse/Ratcliffe married a Thomas Edward Gilbertson in 1867. The 1889 workhouse records say she’s living in Nightingale Lane, her husband a Seaman but she’s found in the censuses as follows: 1871C at 7, May’s Row, Limehouse; 1881C at 4, Elizabeth Cottage, Poplar; 1891C 4, Montague Place, Poplar and 1901C at 7, Crew Street, Poplar. She had at least 8 children: Edward, Thomas, Elizabeth, William, Ralph, Frank, David and John born in 1894. Her husband Thomas is shown working as a Brass Founder, an Engine Driver in Shop and a Dock Labourer.
The workhouse records also mention the mother, Mary Brown, born 1817 who is stated to have, “... lived 35 years in the Union”. At one time or another they all seem to have worked at Johnson’s Lead Works.
I found one possible Brown family (with discrepancies) in the 1871 census, at Farthing Hatch, Limehouse (the parents James and Mary are from Ireland) so it looks as if the best bet is to hope someone is researching the Gilbertsons and have managed to trace things back.
I have a lot of information but with many loose ends, if you are doing any research on any of these lines maybe we can join up the dots.
Many thanks, David

Hallo David,
I hope this is a case of better late than never... I joinedGRU only today & found your message when making a casual check on Gilbertson.
Thomas E. Gilbertson & Elizabeth Brown were my grgrparents. I've been concentrating on the Gilbertsons via ancestry.com website, & you seem to have more info on Elizabeth's family than I have - except for knowing from her marriage cert that her father was James & employed as a ballast cleaner (can also have "something to do with shipping" apparently). You've obviously been more thorough in your search, & it helps me to know that the mother was named Mary. From the census records I had betted on a certain Frances. Now I shall go back & look again. Elizabeth died in 1934. My grfather, her son David, died before I was born. I can't recall any contact with his mother's side of the family as a child. My dad is also dead, but 2 of his siblings are still with us, going v. strong @ 91 & 96, so I shall ask whether they remember anything of their grmother's family & get back to you if I find out anything.
You've helped me so I hope I can eventually help you a little in return....
