The earliest Cairns recorded by Mr. Lawlor's is one "William DE CARNYS OF THAT ILK, also of Whitburn, Linlithgowshire. He was a witness to a charter in 1349; Had a new grant of Whitburn, 1363. As his eldest sons appear to have been of age about 1360, he was evidently born about 1300-1310."
