I am trying to find the parents of my great grandfather, William Campbell. William was born in Newcastle upon Tyne c 1822 but spent most of his farming at Nigg and Durris in Kincardineshire, Scotland. William married Elizabeth Reid in 1849 and died in Durris in 1888. The official record of his death does not give the names of his parents. Can anyone help me?

If he married in Scotland, there won't be a cert.

Civil registration in Scotland commenced in 1855

Hi Brummiejan
That is him. I do have an OPR for his 1849 marriage but it does not state who his parents were. Only when civil registration was introduced in Scotland in 1855 was there a requirement for the names of the parents to be included on the marriage record

Colin...A quick search of Northumberland (1881 Census) shows a number of Campbells living in and around the area who where born abt.same time as William and listed as b Ncle....may be worthwhile looking at them see if any names sound familiar...

Hi Eringobragh1916
I am afraid there are far too many Campbell families living in Newcastle upon Tyne around 1820 to research adequately and it is very hard to link them to Kincardineshire. Two questions occur. If William's parents resided in Newcastle, why is he to be found farming in Nigg, Kincardineshire? Alternatively, if his parents resided in Nigg, why was William born in Newcastle? Remember this was at a time when travel around the UK was difficult

Colin...The idea of looking at those Campbells on the 1881 Census b.Ncle. and around abt the same time as Wm. was to see if a link may established through naming patterns..there is actually only 23 Cambell's families listed having someone within the age group..I dont have access to any earlier ones to check for you...
I wouldn't put to much emphasis on a link between Ncle/Kinc. or vice versa..People travelled all over the place following the work..Some of my Scottish Ancestors originated in Rae (Highlands) and ended up on the Tyne...

Hi Eringobragh1916. I am not sure I understand what you are suggesting I do. I have already looked at the 1841 Census for Newcastle and can only find one William Campbell of roughly the right age but he was born in Scotland. I have also looked at the 1841 Census for the whole of Scotland and can only find one WC of the right age who was born in England, but I think he was actually born in Woolwich, Kent rather than Newcastle

Hi All
I would be interested to hear of any household in the 1851 Census of the parish of Nigg, Kincardineshire with a male or female Campbell aged 48 and over in it

Hi Helen
Alexander & Margaret can't be William's parents (he was 28 in 1851) but they could relatives. What about a household in the 1841 Census in Nigg with a male/female Campbell aged 38 and over in it?

Colin Report 9 Jul 2011 18:13

Since my last post, I have discovered a James and Anne Campbell living in South Loirston, Nigg, Kincardineshire in the 1841 and 1851 Censuses. They are aged 73 and 70 in 1851 and so could just be my William's parents agewise. Interestingly James is descibed in the Censuses as being a Chelsea Pensioner from the Royal Artillery so he must have travelled a lot which could explain why my William was born in Newcastle upon Tyne. James & Anne were married in Nigg in 1806 and according to the IGI had children named Margaret b 1817, Walter b 1818, Ann b 1821 and George b 1823. I believe they also had two children, William b 1815 and James b 1817 who died as babies. There is also the possibility that my William b 1822 was an illegitimate son of James.
Does anyone have any advice to give on the above?

Another poosibility that has occured to me is that agewise, my William Campbell b c1822 could just be the illegitimate son of Alexander Campbell b 1805 (referred to by Helen above) prior to his marriage to Margaret. In the 1851 Census, Alexander Campbell was a quarrier at North Loirston, Nigg, Kincardineshire whilst my William was a crofter at North Loirston. More than a coincidence? Does anyone have any views?

Colin - re:

It wasn't really so difficult to take a boat from Newcastle to Aberdeen.
I've got one family of farmers who continually seem to flit between Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, and Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire - OK, it's only 120 m, not 170 m like you're talking abt, but still...

Hi Potty
I thank you for your interest
I was aware of this interesting family before. The parents are James Campbell who was a master mariner and Ann Hogarth. Unfortunately for me, I found a William Campbell aged 31 in the 1851 Census still living in Tynemouth who I concluded was James's son above. He was also a master mariner. My William Campbell was definitely living in Nigg, Kincardineshire along with his wife in the 1851 Census
