Trying to find Cottrell

COTTRELL/COTTRILL. I'm trying to find info on my grt. grand-father - Joseph T Cottrell. He changed the spelling of his name to Cottrill when he joined the army in 1888. I know he was born around 1870, possibly in the Manchester area, & had several siblings including a sister called Martha. He doesn't seem to exist on any site. He should be on the 1881 census - but doesn't appear to be - unless the D.O.B. is wrong. Can anyone help - please!
