I really don't know, Pat. He was a teenager when his father died, you wouldn't think he would have forgotten his father's name!

Pat Report 4 Jul 2009 18:06

hi margaret do you think it possible to be wrong family although i have looked for john cross and found nothing

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 4 Jul 2009 18:39

Again, I really don't know, Pat. It seems to be the right family because wife Sarah was born in Mansfield and that's where they were married.
I'll do some more searching.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 4 Jul 2009 18:43

Just noticed, Pat, you have son John born 1852 but William & Sarah didn't marry till 1855.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 4 Jul 2009 19:01

Oops! Made a mistake on the 1861 census. Sarah was born Mansfield Woodhouse not Workhouse. I've corrected it.
Wonder if that son John was an illegitimate son of Sarah before she married. If so, could this be him with grandparents?
1861 census
Stevensons Buildings, Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire
Thomas Crooke, head, 68, ag lab, born Notts, MD Woodhouse
Mary, wife, 65, born Leics, Loughbrough
John, grandson, 8, born MD Woodhouse
Charles Bennett, inmate?, 36, wheelwright, born Derby, Ilkeston

That seems to confirm the 1861 census, Sharon, where John Crooke is a grandson of Thomas & Mary.
