Same Joseph in 1911 in the workhouse, perhaps he classed himself as a widower. They seem to have been apart for most of their marriage.

Thank you to every one for your help.

I have managed to get a copy of lens birth certificate, but it does not contain a fathers name.
I have also found out he had 2 brothers and a sister.
len and a sister mary were born at, 16 little paris street, lambeth, 1914-16 and George at 1 Princess Mews, Princess street Southwark 1912.Joseph was born in 1911.
Again no fathers name on birth certificates, which i find strange.

Georges marriage certificate 1944 states that his father was George William Jeffs, deceased, a G P O Foreman ,which confuses things further.
It makes me wonder if they were all illigitimate and he made up his fathers name.
The family lived in Trevelyan Rd SW17 about 1940-60 approx, we think.
I cant find a record of Esthers death, so I presume she may have remarried and died under another name.
My search continues.

If no Father's name on birth certificate, then illegitimate. If then there is a Father's name on marriage certificate, an invented name. It could be what the child has been told by the Mother, or what the person has invented themselves.
