Their has to be some one out there who can help me ?Philip was in the merchant navy, worked for the Cunard line was on a ship about to leave Australia in 1949 when just out of the harbor he jumped/fell over board when ofered a life belt raised his hand and went under.that is what the family was told, how ever it was also well known that he was an exalant swimmer, is there any way that the ships log would have a recored of this event that I or any other family member could see and verifey this.

Hi all, this must be the man in question, from NLA Trove newspapers site - how sad

The Advertiser (Adelaide), Saturday 5 November 1949, p.1
LIFEBELT WASHED ASHORE
The discovery of a lifebelt from the freighter Kent on Sellick's Beach is believed to be a link with the disappearance at sea of an assistant steward from the ship when the vessel was passing through Investigator Strait on October 27. The steward, Phillip James Curwood, 30, was reported to have disappeared overboard about eight miles south of Troubridge Point. The lifebelt was washed ashore at a point 35 miles in a direct line from Troubridge Point. A search of the beach in the vicinity for Curwood's body was unsuccessful.

-

Even if he was a great swimmer, 8 miles is a very long way in open southern ocean (almost 13 km).

TootyFruity Report 14 Jun 2011 18:40

It doesn't make sense to report it after so many years. What was wrong with the post?

jax

jax Report 14 Jun 2011 18:45
