Trying to Find Joseph Nunas D'Oliviera

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Sally Report 29 Mar 2010 23:22

I am trying to trace a man known as Joseph Nunas D'Oliviera. He died in 1864 in London. He is named as the father on the marriage cert of Sarah Alice Nunas D'Oliviera but cannot find a marriage cert between him and her mother Emma Budgen. Emma later married an Edward Howes and had further children. The spelling of D'Oliviera is sometimes spelt D'Oliveira or De Oliveira. Any info would be welcome on either Howes, Budgen or D'Oliviera.

Could you put up a census entry, or marriage entry, so we can see a bit more information. (As I am having trouble finding anything) Just a marriage date for Edward Howes and Emma would help.
Thanks

Thanks for all of this. Still no record of a marriage between the two of them but I'll start looking.

Can you just clarify something. Emma married Edwin in 66 and had Sarah A baptised is 67 along with Edwin Thomas but she called herself and Sarah A "Deoleverria" despite having married Edwin Howes the year before Have I got that right?

No Sally,

Sarah was baptised as:

Sarah Alice Deoleverria
and Joseph was given as her father, along with mother Emma (first names of parents only recorded in register, as was usual!)

She was obviously baptised with the details she would have given had she been baptised soon after her birth.

Following on from previous requests. I have now found that Emma and Joseph had another child Maria who died on 3rd March 1864 aged 3. Sarah Alice was born on 28th May 1864. Joseph is shown as deceased on Sarah's birth cert but not on Maria's death cert. The Joseph Antonio Gonzalaz Oliviera mentioned earlier died on 24 April 64 but was 84 when he died, the address at death does not tally with either birth or death cert of his children. I have been told by a distant relative that Edwin Howes first wife died abroad and when he returned to England he brought Emma back with him and then married her. Can someone please see if they can find any trace of Emma, Edwin or Edwin's first wife Sara Godden on passenger lists. I've looked but can't see anything. My hope is I can find out which country they went to and from there try to find a marriage between Emma and Joseph or Alice's birth. I have not been able to find a birth cert for Maria Nunas De Oliviera. Thanks in advancve

Do any of you have access to births and marriages abroad? If so could you try and find either a marriage between Joseph Nunas De Oliviera and Emma Budgen around 1860 or a birth of Maria Nunas De Oliviera around 1861. My guess is Portugual or Spain and an outside bet is Brazil. Sorry to be so vague. In addition if anyone can find details of a Sarah Godden or Sarah Howes travelling abroad in the late 1850's early 60's. Thanks

Hi

I posted a message asking for help searching for Joseph Nunas De Oliviera a few months ago. I finally located him and his marriage to Emma Budgen my great x4 grandmother in Victoria Australia. Emma went to Australia on an assisted passage in 1857, married Joseph in 1859. Joseph died in 1863 and Emma returned to the UK and married Edwin Howes in 1866. Mystery finally solved and thanks to everyone who searched their records

Tonight I have googled Joseph as I have found him very interesting. He is a (very) distant relative of my son.

And this is how I found this thread. I googled Joseph as I am still unsure as to if he was born in Portugal. I cannot find evidence to prove it. I think it is a distinct possibility that he was born in Australia. His parents are Joseph Nunas and Maria De Oliviera. I think maybe they were the ones from Portugal. But I can't find evidence for this theory either.

The problem with those two is there is evidence of the being in America but none of them being in Australia. It's a wonderful puzzle.
