Jay/Rudge Family

I am trying to find more details on my grandmother Elizabeth Jay (Rudge) b.19 May 1900 d.19 Apr 1971. I cannot find any mention in either 1901 or 1911 census. Her Marriage certifcate (1920) names her father as Arthur James Rudge (deceased). She used the name of Lizzie on her marriage certificate although her name was elizabeth, I have tried searches with this in mind but still come up blank.
She lived (& died) in the Birmingham area, although I'm told that she may have originally come from the Worcestershire area?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

She married my Grandad (Percy Jay) on the 15 July 1920 in Kings Norton, Birmingham. I have purchased a copy of the certificate.

hi Neil

Have you got her mother's name

Deb

Hi Deb
No I only have her Fathers name which is on the marriage certificate, Plus I think she told a white lie on the certificate, she sates her age as 21 but I know from family that her d.o.b was 19 may 1900, plus the d.o.b on the death index shows the same date. A mothers maiden name would open everything up for me

Thanks

I've tried to find her fathers death. There are 2 Arthur J Rudge deaths between 1900 and 1920. One would have too young to be her father, and I can find the second in 1901 census with his family.

I wonder if Arthur is a made up name for the marriage cert and she was actually born out of wedlock?

Thanks, I will check them out. I suppose its possible that she could have come from Birmingham, Before all the county borders were changed, parts of what is now Birmingham were in worcestershire, staffordshire and of course B'ham was in Warwickshire before the term west midlands was heard of.
To the other idea of being born out of wedlock, She had a younger brother called Reginald (approx 1906) who died approx 1978 (never married)
There is also the possibilty that both she and her brother were in a workhouse institution but i dont think that would explain the no show on the 1901 census.

Hi Neil Does it say what Arthur James Rudge did as an occupation on Lizzies marriage cert? (it sometimes does even if they are deceased)

There is this family in 1911 census--What do you think?

I have just checked out the two possible births. Sadly it doesn't give me a mothers maiden name, I think they didn't start putting this information until a bit later

The 1911 census looks very possible, Names & Arthurs occupation plus location seem to tie up. I will have to check with my cousin, she mentioned once that she thought nan had a few sisters, but as i had no proof i forgot about it.
Sadly I've got to go to work now but i will try to get on the net to check this post.

Many thanks

Reginald Arthur Rudge, 1906 upton - sadly no mothers maiden name on index, 1911 census shows a Reggie so I will search a birth for that name

By The way Neil I am pretty sure the CERTIE in 1911 census should be BERTIE --It is only the transciption I have put on --you can see the original scan on 1911,

Well this lot has certainly gave me more information that I first thought, the 1911 census from Barbara looks very promising, the fact that she was named as Lizzie on the census rather than Elizabeth sort of ties in with her putting that on her marriage certificate, also on the birth certificate of my oldest aunt., but obviously later in life she reverted back to Elizabeth

Thank you to everyone who has took the time to help me
