I am trying to find the family of Elizabeth Dean b 1892 in Wolstanton, Elizabeth married Seth Walley also b1892 of Middlewich Cheshire in July 1916 in Kidsgrove Staffordshire. Fourteen months later in 1917 Seth was killed at the battle of Ypres. We only discovered through my research that he had married the year before his death. It would be wonderful to find out whether Seth and Elizabeth had a child and if not we would like to know what happened to this poor young bride. We hope she went on to have a family of her own. Do get in touch if you are able to help - Thanks Genes community - Viv Higginson - PS- Seth was my husband's Great Uncle.

No Walley/Dean births registered in England or Wales 1916~1918

There is this marriage of an Elizabeth Walley in Wolstanton in 1918 but obviously only a copy of the certificate will reveal if she was a widow:

May I ask how you know Elizabeth was born in Middlewich? I can't find an Elizabeth Dean in Middlewich and was wondering if she'd been married before.

Often by the time the CSGC memorial records were prepared, the widow had remarried and her new name appears in the record. Unfortunately, Seth is one of the ones for whom no family information at all is given.

Still not seeing a birth for Elizabeth. She was Elizabeth L; there are only these two 1888-1895:

Births Dec 1891
Dean Elizabeth Lilian Preston 8e 564
Births Jun 1893
Dean Elizabeth Lavinia Wandsworth 1d 767

Do you know that she was born in Wolstanton (how?), or only that she was married there?

If you're going by her age at marriage, the 1891 birth would fit.

1911 anybody -- for places of birth?

DEAN ELIZABETH 1890 21 Wolstanton Staffordshire

DEAN ELIZABETH 1892 19 Wolstanton Staffordshire

Births Mar 1892
Dean Elizabeth Wolstanton 6b 143

but no middle initial (she may have added a middle name)

On that theory, the Bevans-Walley marriage would look good; no Bevans-Dean births.

But hmm, something's messy.

The image actually says WALLEY. It is very fuzzy, even at Ancestry, but the "a" is identical to the "a" in Barnes immediately above, and does not resemble the "e".

I guess the image used by FreeBMD was so much worse that it looked like Astley to the transcriber!

But thank you PMs are nice to get too, so thanks. ;) (Sometimes, if it's been a while, we just don't remember what they're about!)

My mother's uncle was killed in WWI, only a couple of weeks before the Armistice. So much loss, for so little reason.

Your story had reminded me of one I worked on a couple of years ago -- at another site, I was helping someone look for family of her great-aunt's husband. He had been killed at the front shorly after their marriage; she had a miscarriage and died not long after herself. The great-niece wanted to find any living family of the groom so she could share the wedding photos she had, which could be of some comfort to someone.

She didn't know his name and marriages weren't transcribed yet, but I dug through the GRO images and found him. Then I searched here at GR for people who had him in their tree, and contacted four of them.

One replied, and to my amazement, she was his granddaughter. He had had a child back home before he met the great-aunt in Plymouth just before being sent to the front.

The funny part of the story is that when we were chatting by PM, she mentioned having a cousin in British Columbia -- I'm in Canada, but I've never been to BC. ;) She is in Worksop herself, and I said how one of my families is from the area, and in 1994 my mum and I visited the pub in Worksop that my grandmother's uncle from Calverton owned around 1900.

A little while earlier, I'd been contacted through Ancestry by a granddaughter of that uncle. So when I told the woman here at GR about my Worksop connection, she said (changing the names for privacy) ...

"I cant believe what you have just said about Smith family
My friend Jane Smith Jones I think has been in touch with you she has told me about you and about Calverton"

Small world. ;)

I'm glad we could help find answers to your question!

Hi Liz - Thank you for persevering with this one - I am still not sure as Elizabeth's marriage certificate states Father Albert Dean Engineer's Fitter and I believe he was formerly a coal miner traveling around a bit as the children were born in different parts of Staffordshire. I am very happy with the outcome of asking the Genes community and adding a second marriage to Eliza's story. Have a good weekend - Viv

JaneyCanuck Report 19 Jun 2010 19:32

Ah - is that info about her father new to us?

1901

Name: Elizabeth Dean
Age: 9
Estimated birth year: abt 1892
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Albert
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Where born: Bucknall, Staffordshire, England

Civil parish: Goldenhill
Town: Goldenhill
County/Island: Staffordshire

Albert Dean 37
Elizabeth Dean 38
Charles Dean 16
Earnest Dean 14
Florence Dean 11
Elizabeth Dean 9
Arthur Dean 7
Herbert Dean 5
Martha Dean 2
Edith Dean 2 months

Albert is "Coal Miner Lumber Setter underground", with "C Below" overwritten (as a census category I think; others have "C Hewer", e.g.).

The younger children were born in Goldenhill, the others elsewhere.

What I'm still not understanding is how you have information about Elizabeth's place of birth and siblings, and the father's previous occupation and travels, when you've only recently discovered the marriage. You had all this info already?

Um, yes. You have the children from the 1901 household in your tree.

Are you in touch with the other person who has the Dean children born in Bucknall and Goldenhill in trees?

If you did have that information before - parents and siblings, and other info from the census - it makes sense to disclose it in the first place so others have info for searching.

I still haven't found any of them in 1911, despite much searching. But contacting the person who has them in his tree might lead to family members with info about Elizabeth.

The Joseph Bevans whose death I posted on p.1 was born in Cheshire and is in Cheshire in 1901 and 1911. A GR member has him in her tree.

Hello Vivien

If you wish to amend Seth's record with the CWGC, it is possible. I had four relatives died in WW1, none with their details recorded, and I got them all amended, plus one in WW2. The most tragic was my great uncle Leonard Stokes who married Alma Beverley Wilkinson at the age of 18, and four months later was killed in France. Probably totally unaware that his new bride was pregnant. She had little Alma almost exactly 9 months after her marriage. The little mite sadly died of diptheria aged 15 months. Telling you that tale has just reminded me that somebody gave me a lead about a second marriage for Alma which I haven't followed up.

Anyway, I got the records amended to include his wife as well as his parents. They wanted copies of all relevant certificates to ensure they were amending the right person, but it was free to do, and now has the record straight.
