The name Formoy probably originates in Ireland, where there are several similar place-names such as Fermoy, near Cork, and Formoyle, which we came across during a trip down the Shannon. It apparently means 'tussock' or, alternatively, is derived from the word for 'farmer'. All the Formoys (and Fermoys!) at the time of the census can be traced to Jane Formoy (nee Rutland??) b.1830 and her husband William Formoy b. 1832 or are descended from Ralph and Charlotte Formoy(or Fermoy or Formey). Charlotte nee Hemington..both born 1830. Contact me Kathy for info on how they are all linked!! All my info is gleaned from online records only.
