Any info on Susanna Goodchild who was married to John Craswell in Arborfield nr Reading Berks. I have 5 children for them. William b 1793. Mary b 1794. James( my 2* gt grandad) b 1800. Edward b 1801. Susanna b 1804, all from Arborfield. Any help will be appreciated.

Have just seen your search message. I can confirm that John Craswell married Susanna Goodchild in Arborfield (old church) on November 15th 1792.
The six children of the marriage which I have found were all baptised in this church dedicated to St Bartholomew. The church ceased to be used in 1863 and now is in ruins.

I did try in the reading records office, but because Arborfield was once in Wilts,the records man said that most of the info would be in Trowbridge. ???.

It seems that the man at the BRO didn't know what he was talking about! Arborfield has never been in Wiltshire (however a nearby village, Swallowfield has). To find records for Arborfield you sometimes have to try "Newland". Arborfield & Newland joined together in 1948 but before that part of what is thought of as Arborfield was actually in the Liberty of Newland, which came under Hurst.
Still that doesn't help with your search......Perhaps we should look in the nearby villages eg. Barkham, Shinfield and Swallowfield? I have access to the Barkham and Swallowfield records so I'll check them.

Hello again

Probably know this already but here goes....

Susannah Craswell(Cresswell) on both the 1841 and 1851 census in Reading. She seems to have died in the Dec Q of 1854 in Reading....no sign of John although he seems to have died in the Dec Q of 1849 in Reading.

In 1851 Susannah appears to be living with her married daughter Susannah Thatcher and her son-in-law Thomas Thatcher, a tailor and their five children,
Susannah Craswell appears to have been born in Hare Hatch, Berkshire (near Maidenhead) in about 1772.

Daughter Susannah was married in St Laurence Church, Reading on July 17th 1838 - witnesses were William Craswell and Mary Hall
Thomas Thatcher the groom was the son of James and the bride the daughter of John (so that fits!)
They were both of full age.

Hopefully this is the right family and if the census is correct then we should be searching for Susannah Goodchild born c 1772 in Hare Hatch, Berkshire.
