Find Ancestors

1911 census shows a JOSEPH HAZLITT, 34, Single, Clog Maker, born Fleetwood at 119 Every Street, Ancoats, Manchester. Cannot find him anywhere before. Manchester Electoral Roll for 1914 shows a GEORGE HAZLITT, at that address, but I cannot trace him. My grandfather Lancelot Strong,(Wife Elizabeth Hazlitt) and uncle Rupert used this address in 1914-15 on Army lists. I am stumped for family connection. Can anyone help me ?

My grandfather was Lancelot Strong born 1858 Hayton Cumberland. His first wife was Anna Mary Hopkins, married 1885 Co.Mayo when Lancelot was in the Army. She died, age 23, in May 1890 having had 3 children. Lancelot then married (Jan.1892 in Fleetwood) my grandmother Elizabeth Wyatt Hazlitt (born Sept 1869 Fleetwood. Her parents were James Hazlitt (b.abt 1822 Ireland) and Elizabeth Wyatt (b.1834 Glossop, Derbys). Eliz.W.Hazlitt's siblings I have as Jane Ann (1863), Thomas James (1865), George William (1867-1874), and George Hammond Hazlit (1874).
The 1911 census original clearly shows Joseph Hazlitt age 34 Single Clog Maker born Fleetwood, together with sister Annie 456 Single also born Fleetwood.
I have searched through various spellings of Hazlitt in FreeBMD, and trawled FindMyPast but so far have not found this joseph.
Very strange because my grandfather gives 119 Every Street Manchester on his Army Reserve enlistment papers 1n 1914, so there must be a family connection - but Where ??
So far I am stumped.

There is no Joseph!.

Joseph is marked as Annie's brother on census and there is only one Annie who fits - this is Jane Ann. Therefore it is probable that Joseph was christened by another name and was just known as Joseph.

It doesn't help you much but I really think that must be the case.

Thanks for your replies.
I have most of the info re grandmother Elizabeth Wyatt Hazlitt, and grandfather Lancelot Strong, also re their childre ( my aunts/uncles).
The mystery is Joseph Hazlitt shown in 1911 census, age 34, born Fleetwood - I have not been able to trace any Joseph, or similar name, born around 1877.
The Annie shown as his sister age 46 could possibly be Jane Ann Hazlitt b.abt Dec.1863 Fleetwood, i.e. my grandmother's elder sister, but that would make Joseph her brother - so why does he not appear in any census (until 1911) ?
So, still digging.




I suggest that Joseph might well have been under another name on earlier censuses, either a nickname or a middle name. OR that he was actually a cousin, and that the siblings of Elizabeth's father should be followed.

Apologies to all for not replying earlier - have had problem with magic box - lost all email messages for a month between Jan/Feb - also was taking literally 45 minutes from switch on to getting desktop icons - my son traced it to BillGates 'must have' Internet Explorer which was corrupted ant taking up all CPU. Touch wood is now o.k.
Thanks also Dea - I was not aware of Emily Brown Hazlitt before.
Am still searching for my Joseph. Tracking back on other Hazlitt families, and various spellings, to see if I can find a link. Not helped by the fact that one generation back they came from Ireland, so difficult to tie up uncles etc.
Have sent for a couple of certificates, but don't expect it will answer the query.
Will let you know if I have that Eureka moment.
