Hello,
Could someone please help me locate census for this family. The extract below is taken from Farmers in NZ Electronic Text Center. I am looking for Arthur and his siblings, in particular, one of the brothers, Henry Chamberlain who, in NZ, married Edith Hartnell (nee Carpenter).
Grateful for census help and also the shipping record in 1877 from UK to NZ.
Thanking you Kaye
Arthur Chamberlain - Farmer, Thongsleigh Farm, Brookside. Mr. Chamberlain was born in 1858, and is fifth son of the late Peter Chamberlain, of Thongsleigh Farm, Tiverton, Devonshire, England. He was educated at the English Diocesan Church school, Sampford, Peverell. After the death of his father, he, with his mother, two sisters, and three brothers, came to Canterbury by the ship “Loch Fleet,” and landed at Lyttelton, New Zealand in 1877.

Hi Lewella,
Thank you so much for doing this research for me, appreciated. Best I do order his death cert, I feel pretty confident I have found the right death. This great family left their mark in NZ, with farming and other ventures.
Thanks for looking for the shipping records.
All the best Kaye

Hello All,
Can someone kindly help again. I'm having trouble locating the birth of Henry Chamberlain. From the census above his birth is approx 1840.
These only births I can find from free bdm, nothing earlier. Grateful for any assistance.

Henry was 1 on 1841 census so I would look a little earlier. Birth Registration was not compulsry at that point.

The Loch Fleet. The Fleet was a full-rigged iron ship of 713 tons, built at Glasgow in 1872. She began trading to New Zealand in 1877, and made her last voyage in 1886. This ship generally experienced unfavourable weather on the voyages out to New Zealand. She had a very rough time when bound for Auckland in 1878, and was carried of her course, sailing about 20,000 miles. The ship on that voyage left Gravesend on August 16, and passed Deal on the 19th. Variable winds detained her in the Channel until the 23rd, when she took her final departure from the Lizard. Two months later Captain Robertson had a most anxious time on the run from the Cape to Tasmania. The first storm started on October 14, and continued with unabated fury for two days. On the 15th a tremendous sea broke over the ship, smashing the captain's gig and doing other damage. The weather continued violent, and on the 20th heavy squalls came down, with snow and hail, and the vessel lost a stunsail boom and suffered other damage. The ship was driven before the wind, and travelled from 300 to 320 miles a day. Squally weather continued right along to the Leeuwin.
On November 6 the ship encountered another storm, which, said one of the passengers on arrival at Auckland, "will live in our memories for ever." The hurricane commenced at 4 p.m., reached its climax about midnight, and caused much damage to the ship. About 7 p.m. a tremendous sea struck the ship, and two hours later another wave, fully 40ft high, broke over the poop and washed the two men from the wheel. One man was carried the whole length of the ship. The other, coming in collision with one of the hatches, was severely knocked about, and sustained a nasty wound in the head. Fortunately the second mate, Mr. Montgomery, rushed to the wheel, otherwise the Loch Fleet might never have reached Auckland. The decks were completely filled with water, and the heavy seas broke the poop rails and carried everything movable overboard.
The Loch Fleet's passages to New Zealand were:—
To Auckland. Sailed. Arrived. Captain. Days. Aug. 17, '77 Nov. 21, '78 Robertson 96 Sep. 6 Dec. 20, '80 Clachie 105 July 9 Nov. 8, '82 Cochrane 122 To Lyttelton. Aug. 16 Nov. 24, '77 Robertson 100 To Dunedin. Aug. 29 Dec. 22, '79 Robertson 115 Land to land 102 Sep. 1 Dec. 14, '81 Clachie 104 *Nov. 1 Feb. 28, '86 Jones 120

Hi Christine,
Thank you for the shipping information that was very interesting, also the Christchurch Press link and info. I will follow up with the Library in Christchurch to see if I can obtain copies of Obituaries for the Chamberlain men.
I think you could be right about Henry's birth not being registered as its definately not there... unless of course he was born out of the district even though his census states he was born in Cheriton Fitzpaine.
Thanks again Kaye

What I said was that the births you have posted are unlikely to be right as Henry is one year old in 1841 and the births you posted are after 1844. Birth registratioon did not start til 1839 and it was not compulsory until much later so his birth may not be registered. There is an online parish clerkfor Dorset but not all the villages are covered yet. With a little patience you will find that they will eventually transcribe the baptismal record. Hower if you google online parish clerk dorset you may be able tocontact someone for a look up. Alternatively posyt on records a request for a lookup.

First, please remove your email address from your posting ....... it is against the T&C's of GR, and your posting may well be removed.
Secondly, this is an old posting, and Kaye may well not be checking.
You would do much better to send her a pm (private message) through the GR system.
Just click on her name, and write your message in the box that appears.
GR will then send her an email to her home email address to let her know that there is a message waiting.
They do NOT notify about new postings on threads.

Hello Wendy,
As well as taking Sylvia's excellent (as usual) advice, it may be interesting for you to see who else is researching your family and would be glad of your information.
If you put some of the Chamberlain names you have into the Search Trees box above, it will show you if anyone else has the names in their tree. If you find a connection, you can contact the tree owner. Cx.
