I am past being confused ! I have(had) a great great grandmother Agnes(b.1850c) born in India. I don't have a maiden name. I then have Agnes on the 1871 census living as Agnes Whitney, wife, mother of Louisa Whiting (b.1870c) at The Shaft Barracks, Western Heights Kent. I cannot find her as a Whitney or Whiting. Incidentally a Charles Larche is also shown on the 1871 census at the Shaft Barracks. |

She must have been married to be living in the barracks. |

On the Isle of Wight records the birth of Emma Whiting has the names Hayes and Murphy where mother's maiden name would be. |

"Late Murphy, formerly Hayes" means her maiden name was Hayes. She must have married a Murphy before she married Henry. |
