Jessie Macnally was my Great Grandmother. She was a comedienne in the Music Hall & her stage name was Nellie Macnally. She was married to Walter Herbert McCarthy & they had 2 children, Walter & Norah.McCarthy was not the true name as Walter H had changed his name by d poll. The original name is not known. He was Jewish & an accountant whose clients were in the theatre. They lived in Kennington in the 1890s at the same time as Charlie Chaplin was living in poverty with his mother & brother.Walter junior was Charlie's best friend & mentioned in his autobiography.Mrs McCarthy (Nellie Macnally)died suddenly and I know that Walter junior died aged 21 of either Diabetes or TB.Mr McCarthy married again to a woman called Ethel. My Grandmother spent a short time at a finishing school in Belgium. Her father turned his back on her when she married my Grandfather as he was not considered good enough. She learned of the name change on his deathbed but it was not passed on. |
