Trying to piece together the bits of info we have on my Husbands side of the family. We know his G.grandfather was John Daniel Matthews, born 1876.(Died 1933). We know he was a compositor/lynotype operator for the daily Telegraph,We have a picture of him working, and certificate he recieved for speed at his work. we know he was born in Simpson (now part of MIlton Keynes)and that he married Emily Hawkins. We know his father was George Matthews, born circa 1853 carpenter and Undertaker, married to Emma Eastment, born circa 1856. We have photos of all. We also know that at the time of the 1901 census John Daniel's branch of the family were living in Bath Somerset. But there was also another John Matthews living in Simpson also a carpenter aged 72 who was Georges Father. There were also other Matthews in the same locality, certainly in a 5-10 mile radius, and there are alot of them Carpenters John Daniel and Emily had at least 7 children, and 2 that died in infancy, my husbands grandfather Frederick Haley Matthews was one of them, there were also Edgar George,Cecil Jack,Victor Rupert, Edward Eastment, Vera and Elsie,I know the family spread out from the Simpson, Fenny Stratford Bletchley area and as far as I know certainly when we were living in Milton Keynes a few years ago there was still a branch of Matthews undertakers in Bletchley, who I believe are direct decendants of George and his brothers What we would like to find out is names of John Daniels brothers and sisters, I know Grandpa used to talk about an Uncle who ran the Bridge Inn/public house at Fenny Stratford and of staying there on holidays as a child, also that another uncle had a workshop opposite the pub and was a mechanic and I vaguely remember him saying that they possibly also made the coffins out the back of this workshop. There was still a wrought iron gate as grandpa had described it accross the road from the Pub where he says the workshop was when we looked about 5 years ago.At that time we knew the Fenny Stratford Connection but oddly not the Simpson one which it seems is the stronger link, I used to go to Simpson Village hall every week, but never looked in the churchyard which more than likely could have helped alot!! We no longer live in the UK which makes it harder to find out these things so any additional info would be very much appreciated. Thanks |
