Thanks Claire

It looks like you may be correct about these two.

I just cannot find anything on any censuses though for the others.

I can't see anything else either

Melvina could be Martha

Shirley,

I had a look at the census above, to me it looks like the baby is 'Sevina' (not Lavinia).

Can't find an exact match for them on the 1871 census! There's a Hannah, correct age, but husband's name is John.

I thought it was a S name too, if you look at Sally a couple of rows up the first letters are the same

Hi all

Thanks for looking.

Yes I think you are right about it being Sevina.

John next door is Josephs son from his marriage to Betty Whitehead and Jacob is Johns brother my GGGrandfather.

I can find Jacob on other censuses but not Josephs family.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Shirley

Shirley,

Do you know if Joseph was still living in 1871?

There's this death, though it doesn't give an age or year of birth.

interesting results from the lancashirebmd site (oldham seem to be unusual in that they recorded mothers maiden name) Maybe Joseph did not actual marry the mother(s) of his children!

there was a Jacob Henry medley born in 1863 in Oldham so probably not the Joseph death in 1864

Shirlock Report 7 Apr 2008 16:33

Hi susan

No I don't know. His name was just Joseph I believe.

If I could find his two marriages it would help.

1st to Betty Whitehead. Oldest child Jenny Medley 1831 Oldham on 1841 census.

Betty dies in 1842 in childbirth.

On 1851 Joseph is married to Hannah Name could be (Chadderton) on Lancs BDM I have found a Lavina reg 1860 with mothers maiden name Chadderton. but, we have now decided it's not Lavina but Sevina. I cannot find her either.

Problem is there are not many Medley surnames in Oldham on 1841 I cannot be sure he really originated from there.

Shirlock

Shirlock Report 7 Apr 2008 17:13

Yes Ann

John was Josephs son from marriage to Betty Whitehead and living next door to him on the 1861 in Timber St Werneth

I also forgot to mention earlier Joseph and Hannah on the 1851 were down as Hedley and not Medley.

Yes I saw that Ann but, it does not have a source number on it so I don't know where she was christened.

Susan

Susan Report 7 Apr 2008 18:55

Shirley,

If you look at "familysearch.org" you will get the source number (it's Oldham).

Shirlock

Shirlock Report 7 Apr 2008 19:45

Hi Susan

I saw it was Oldham but there are so many churches in Oldham I have no idea where to look.

On familysearch.org if it has a source number at the bottom of the page and you click on it. it sometimes tells you where the records are kept.

I will make enquiries at Oldham though.

Thank you for looking for me.
