Fitzy Report 7 Apr 2009 14:21

I am looking for some help, I am trying to find a DOB for William Milnes, from the Census it appears he was born in Collingham, Notts about 1846, on his gravestone it states he was 59 when he died in 1905. I think his father is called George Milnes.

I have been searching records and found 3 possible matches between 1842 & 1847 (as I have been told census info can be incorrect), none of the three show George as the father.

The ref's are: 1846 XV 558, 1847 15 603, 1842 XV 564.

Can anyone help or give some advise???

Have you tried this one.

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
about William Milnes
Name: William Milnes
Year of Registration: 1850
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Nottingham
County: Nottinghamshire
Volume: 15
Page: 612

Don't forget that with death records, it depends on what information the informant knew about the deceased.

I can't find him in 1881 - did he marry as if he did the cert would prove his father's name

Birth reg was not compulsory in the 1840's so he might never have been registered

Fitzy Report 7 Apr 2009 21:32

Thank you I will order the cert from 1850, thanks.

He did marry, I never thought of checking it, it confirms that George was his father.

I didn't know it wasn't compulsory in the 1840's to register births, thanks again.

Hi Fitzy,

I have looked through the births between 1844-1848 and can find only the following that may relate to the relative that you are looking for;

[please bear in mind that the 'code' for Colingham is that of Nottingham i.e. '15' or 'XV'] and i can only find two
Milns William = Basford XV 481 - 1844
Milnes William - Mansfield XV 558 - 1846

This may well not fit in with your dates - but please check them out!!

How did you go on at the archives/library?

Hi Elaine, it's been a few months since Fitzy was on here so it's doubtful that he is checking now. Would suggest you click on his name and send your message that way. Hope this helps.

Hi Fitzy,

As promised, these are the other families I found that may or may not be yours?

This one I have posted because it has a William born in Collingham - although the date for William is a little early!

MILNER, William Head Married M 51 1800 Bricklayer Martin Lincolnshire
MILNER, Mary Wife Married F 48 1803 Scotter Lincolnshire
MILNER, John Son Unmarried M 26 1825 Bricklayer Martin Lincolnshire
MILNER, William Son Unmarried M 24 1827 Bricklayer Collingham Nottinghamshire
MILNER, Mary Daughter Unmarried F 19 1832 Collingham Nottinghamshire MILNER, Ellen Daughter F 6 1845 Scholar Collingham Nottinghamshire

This family because they are only about 4 miles from Collingham - the date is nearer to the date you suggested for William?

MILNES, Joseph Head Married M 44 1807 Farmer Of 60 Acres
Collingham Nottinghamshire
MILNES, Mary Wife Married F 36 1815 Farmers Wife Girton
Nottinghamshire
MILNES, William Son M 13 1838 Thorney
Nottinghamshire
MILNES, Henry Son M 10 1841 Thorney Nottinghamshire
MILNES, John Son M 7 1844 Thorney Nottinghamshire
MILNES, Joseph Son M 5 1846 Thorney Nottinghamshire
MILNES, George Son M 2 1849 Thorney Nottinghamshire
HILL, George Servant Unmarried M 18 1833 Farm Lab Kirton
Lincolnshire

My favourite is still the first one I posted though. However, ancestors are slippery characters and I think we should eliminate what we can and then try to work with what is left [is that a quote from Sherlock Holmes???]

What is William's father's occupation on his marriage cert?

Fitzy

Fitzy Report 13 Aug 2011 20:22

His occupation was Labourer, (he died aged 30)!

Fitzy

Fitzy Report 13 Aug 2011 20:26

I have been to the Archives today, William Milnes was born 2/5/1845 in North Collingham, parents George & Charlotte.

His brother George born 5/3/1848 in South Collingham, born after (father George died 23/9/1847) - this one shows parents are George & Sarah (I think the Sarah is an error, as this fits with the census info from 1851, for Charlotte, William & George)

Also Found Charlotte Liley's DOB 20/11/1825 - parents are William & Charlotte)

I think all of the above fits into my tree.
