I am trying to trace an Alfred Morse B 1817. He married Sarah Selby and then Ester Preedy B 1817. He may have been born in Purton or Lydiard Millicent. He lived in Lydiard Millicent and had 2 sons as far as I can tell Mark and Alfred. I am unable to trace any info on Alfred. I am trying to link my family to a Charles Morse b 1810 in Purton. Any help would be appreciated ! Tahnks

Thanks everyone, this info is fab! I have checked both his marriage certs and his fathers name is blank on both. Now, the census says he was born in Purton but lived in Lydaird Millicent, however, I can find no birth record in Purton. I did however find a birth recor for Aug 1816 in Lydiard Millicent, showing him as illegimate. All it says is his mothers name is Amy. I don't know whos name Morse is. (ie Mother/Father) Assuming this is true does anyone have any idea how I may find out about his parents either actual or adopted? Many Thanks

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html
has this:
Groom's Name: William Ody Bride's Name: Amy Morse Marriage Date: 1820 Marriage Place: Lydiard-Millecent, Wiltshire, England Bride's Previous Husband's Name: Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M86695-1 System Origin: England-VR Source Film Number: 496694 Reference Number: 2:3WPKH69 Collection: England Marriages, 1538–1973
Given that there is no exact date, it seems to have been submitted by a Mormon rather than extracted from a parish record.
Yes -- in the IGI
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/search_igi.asp
the marriage has been submitted. There, it shows a date of 21 Feb 1820, which does sound more like it has been taken from an actual parish record.
Some of the submitted records assign a birthdate to Amy of "about 1799", which of course is a complete guess based on the marriage date.
If you search the IGI using only
father: William Ody mother: Amy
you'll find this submitted record:
Mary Ody Christening: 22 JUN 1823 Liddiard-Millicent, , Wiltshire, England Father: William Ody Mother: Emma

A household in the 1841 census:
Civil Parish: Liddiard Treegooze Hundred: Kingsbridge County/Island: Wiltshire Registration district: Cricklade Sub-registration district: Wootton Bassett
William Ody 45 Elizabeth Ody 40 Charles Ody 12 John Ody 8 Thomas Ody 6 Emma Ody 4 Jane Ody 8 MO Eliza Ody 6 MO
In the IGI, again submitted:
WILLIAM ODY Spouse: ELIZABETH BESANT Marriage: 16 FEB 1829 Lydiard Millicent, Wiltshire, England
The date would match with the age of the eldest child in 1841. Possibly first wife was Amy and he was widowed when he married in 1829.

FreeREG confirms this marriage:
http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl
County Wiltshire Place Lydiard Millicent Church All Saints MarriageDate 21 Feb 1820 GroomForename William GroomSurname ODY BrideForename Amy BrideSurname MORSE FileNumber 9912
but gives no details about either spouse, e.g. father's names.
It also confirms the other:
County Wiltshire Place Lydiard Millicent Church All Saints MarriageDate 16 Feb 1829 GroomForename William GroomSurname ODY >> GroomCondition Widower BrideForename Elizabeth BrideSurname BESANT FileNumber 9912
Another possibly interesting marriage, just because of the names:
County Wiltshire Place Lydiard Millicent Church All Saints MarriageDate 21 Oct 1828 GroomForename William GroomSurname MORSE BrideForename Margaret BrideSurname ODY FileNumber 9912
Could be useful, for searching for relations. There are also marriages for
John Ody 1822 - married Maria Morse Richard Ody 1827
in Lydiard Millicent.
If you select Lydiard Millicent & Wiltshire, you can search for other instances of the names. There's no Morse baptism in Lydiard Millicent transcribed. There are loads of Morse marriages. Another surname connection: a John Beasant married an Edith Morse in 1802.
Seems to have been a small world. ;)

These people are on the facing page from the William and Elizabeth Ody household in 1841, in Liddiard Treegooze:
George Ody 25 - farmer Noah Ody 22 - farmer William Ody 19 - farmer Sarah Ody 17 Walter Ody 10
I wonder whether they might be half-siblings (at least) of Alfred Morse?
George's DOB works out to 1816, Walter's to 1831. But they might be rounded.
There are GR members with the name Walter Ody in their tree: 1835/6 Lydiard Tregoze, 1833 Purton, 1831 Cricklade. Just for instance.
Have you not searched trees at all? There is another member with Amy Morse, 1799, Lydiard Millicent, in her tree -- likely just taken from the birthdate in that submitted record in the IGI, but worth a contact to enquire about the connection. Others have the name Amy Morse with slightly later birthdates. That member and another have William Ody, 1796, Lydiard Millicent, in their trees.
I'm a little confused by your initial post:
"I am trying to link my family to a Charles Morse b 1810 in Purton."
Why?
A GR member has Charles Morse 1809 Purton in their tree. If he is the Charles Morse in St Margaret Stratton in 1841, mistranscribed by Ancestry as Moses (yes, in 1851, same children but different wife, shown as born in Purton), an Ancestry user has corrected his surname and can be contacted through that system.
Is Alfred Morse your ancestor, btw?

Sorry for the delay in replying. I do appreciate all the info and time you have taken. I have been investigating the William Ody, Amy Morse marriage. This is the only Amy I can find in LM which fits the right timeframe. I found her birth record and she was born in 1796, which makes her 19/20 when my Alfred was born in 1816. She then married William in 1820, so does all tie in. Amy then died in 1827, and when William remarried, he was shown as a widower, so there does not appear to be any other husbands. I have no GR matches on Alfred, but I'll search on Amy as suggested and see what I get. Interestingly, through another website, I managed to get in contact with a lady who is descended from this Amy's brother. In her tree she has Amy married to William Ody but has an Alfred as another husband. I questioned this to ask if she meant son, and she doesn't know (she complied the info some time ago), so she is going through her notes. So, I also searched for Alfred's, and there are no other Alfred's born, died or anything in LM, Swindon or Purton before mine in 1816. I don't see how I would ever prove it but this may be the Amy I am looking for, but it does seem possible. Unfortunately, Alfred is married by the first census, and so I can't see who he grew up with.
On a seperate note. Charles Morse is the father of Levi Lapper Morse, the second mayor of Swindon. We have his brothers (Ebenezor) family bible and we have long been told (as far back as my great grandfather) that we are related to them. This is what actually got me started on family trees as I wanted to see how we were related. So far I can find no connection whatsoever. So was just wondering if anyone had any info that may help.
Thanks everyone Michelle

So it looks good so far.
About this Levi Lapper Morse -- you need to tell us *when*! I don't know when Swindon got its first mayor, so no idea when he was second mayor. ;)
edit
google anwering my question
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levi_Lapper_Morse
Levi Lapper Morse (24 May 1853 – 10 September 1913) was an English grocer and draper and Liberal Party politician.
Morse was the son of Charles Morse from Stratton St Margaret, near Swindon in Wiltshire. He was educated at the High School, Swindon. He married Winifred, daughter of Isaac Humphries of Broad Hinton, Wiltshire and they had two sons and four daughters. Their son William Ewart Morse was also a Liberal politician in Wiltshire and a Member of Parliament.
Ah -- you did say at the outset that Charles Morse was born 1810 in Purton. ;)

A couple of interesting William Morse-s in 1841:
> William Morse 70 Robert Morse 40 Ann Morse 35 Jane Morse 6 William Morse 3 Thomas Morse 8 MO > Civil Parish: Liddiard Millicent County/Island: Wiltshire
>> right age to be father of Charles 1810
and a possible son?
> William Merse 45 - name corrected to Morse by Ancestry user Martha Merse 40 William Merse 14 > Civil Parish: Purton County/Island: Wiltshire
pilot.familysearch has these births to William Morse and Elizabeth (no way to tell whether they're the same ones) 1790-1820 in Wiltshire:
William 1790 Highworth Charles 1809 Purton Elizabeth 1805 Purton William 1803 Stratton St Margaret
Most likely lookng marriage:
Groom's Name: William Morse Bride's Name: Elizabeth King Marriage Date: 07 Apr 1802 Marriage Place: Purton, Wiltshire, England Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M15257-1 System Origin: England-ODM Source Film Number: 1279304 Collection: England Marriages, 1538–1973
If that William and Elizabeth are parents of Charles 1809, they don't seem to be parents of Amy 1796.
... Of course ... you said you found Amy's birth record, but didn't tell us anything like parents' names.
Name: Amy Morse Gender: Female Baptism/Christening Date: 11 Dec 1796 Baptism/Christening Place: Liddiard-Millicent, Wiltshire, England Father's Name: William Morse Mother's Name: Sarah Indexing Project (Batch) Number: I03686-4 System Origin: England-EASy Source Film Number: 1279412 Collection: England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
That's a submitted record but looks reasonable.
So if her father was William Morse, he wasn't a brother of William Morse father of Charles Morse 1809.
He could have been the father of Charles Morse 1809 with a first wife ...
Groom's Name: William Morse Bride's Name: Sarah Franklino Marriage Date: 14 Oct 1793 Marriage Place: Liddiard-Millicent, Wiltshire, England Indexing Project (Batch) Number: I03686-4 System Origin: England-EASy Source Film Number: 1279412 Collection: England Marriages, 1538–1973
from same batch of submitted records.

Hi
I have managed to prove (as much as you can with these things), that Amy Morse, daughter of William Morse and Sarah Franklin is the person I have been looking for! Thanks to this new information, I have been able to trace this back to William Morse B 1708 married to Sarah ?. They are also in Lydiard Millicent. Has anyone been able to trace this WIlliam and Sarah any further back? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
