The origin of the surname MORT is France and is of nickname origin, being one of those names based on a personal or physical characteristic of the original bearer. The name is a variation of the name More or Maure, which was the name originally given to nomadic people of the northern shores of Africa who conquered Spain in the 8th century. They also spread beyond the Pyrenees in France but were forced back by Charles Martel in 732. It was not until the 15th Century that Granada, the last Moorish stronghold in Spain, was recovered by Ferdinand and Isabella. The moors were easily recognisable by the darkness of their complexion and so in France this term came to signify 'one with dark skin'. Even today the expression 'brun comme un Maure', meaning 'brown as a Moor', is widely used in France. Coat Of Arms - Ermine with an Orange Tree with 3 Oranges on it. Translation - The Ermine symbolises, Power, Purity and Power. Crest - A Lion Or. Translation - Lion symbolises the Generous Spirit of the Warrior. |
