Maureen

use the wild card symbol * ......... this will find any other variants much faster than you thinking of them and then searching for each one separately.

On ancestry there has to be at least 3 letters before the * ................... so you search for mul*

on freebmd you can use the * even after one letter ........ but it would be better to do something like mu*l*

joh* ..... would find John and Johan(n), if the name is indeed germanic in origin.

not helping with finding the parents of John b. ca 1849

but this could be his son Joseph Frederick in 1901

1901 Census

Name: Joseph Mulick
Age: 23
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1878
Relation: Crew
Gender: Male
Where born: Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England

Civil Parish: Royal Navy
Town: Portsmouth
County/Island: Hampshire
Country: England

Registration district: Portsmouth
Sub registration district: Portsea and Landport
ED, institution, or vessel: Duke of Wellington

The family does seem rather to have sprung out of the earth in 1877!

I'm even wondering whether father John was a real person .......... or whether he is another figment of the imagination of an illegitimate child

A search of the UK censuses generally for surname MUHLI*
produces results that include:

Name: Bernard Muhlick
Birth: abt 1873 - Germany
Residence: 1891 - London, St Pancras, London, England

Name: John Muhlig
Spouse: Rosena
Birth: abt 1860 - Germany
Residence: 1891 - Shoreditch, London, England

A 'g' at the end of a word in German is sort a softer "ch", i.e. a throat-clearing sound. ;) Depending on regional accents, the "ch" sound can range from 'k' to 'sh'.

Searching for any events 1838-1850, county Middlesex, surname MU*CH

there is nothing resembling Mulich / Muhlich / Muehlich.

A couple of Mulloch-s, but that's the closest it gets. Ditto on a search for surname MU*G. And for MU*CK, there are Mulock and Mullock, but they're the closest, again.

I do suspect the family was German.

The variants in the IGI are

MUEHLIG
MUEHLICH
MIELICH

which are pretty much a matter of accent.

Evie

I DID read the heading

I looked for John b. 1849 +/- 5 years, Middlesex, wife Mary

I even added Yorkshire to the mix

Nil, Nada, nothing!

didn't think to ask for wife JANE!

I also looked on familysearch, and found the Muhlich variation ..... but didn't follow it up. No Mulich!

Actually, Sylvia, it is both of us being obtuse -- did either of us read the header on the thread?

I think not. ;)

"born c1849, middlesex"

Ha. I just typed "muddlesex". Indeed.

I cannot find any Mulich's on English censuses

There seems to be some suggestion that Mul(l)ich might be a Scottish name .... there are a couple of such people on the 1851 and 1861 Scottish censuses, but no John's

sylvia

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 23 Apr 2009 21:47

Well, Ancestry has no John Mulich in the 1881 census.

So you're going to have to give us something.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 23 Apr 2009 21:44

And if you have him on the 1881 census, you have an idea of his date and place of birth. And you obviously know his wife's name. In this case, Sylvia has found the marriage, and we don't need to guess which woman he married, given that they're both Mary Jane! But for anybody else to find someone in the 1881 census, really -- we need *something* ... spouse's name, children's names, location, DOB ...

Why not give that info in your post?

Have you looked for him in earlier censuses with his father?

Anybody else doing that needs to find the date/place of birth info first, in order to search earlier ...

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 23 Apr 2009 21:41

Is this John's marriage registration?

If so, it shows he got married in Yorkshire ...... helps to know that for searching!

Marriages Jun 1877 (>99%)

Farrell John Leeds 9b 657
>>>>Mulich John Leeds 9b 657
Rudd Mary Jane Leeds 9b 657
Smith Mary Jane Leeds 9b 657

I cannot find him on the 1881 on ancestry ....... where did you find him, and where was he living?
