Just wondering if any one would like to help me with a bit of birth and marriage puzzle please..

Ive just found out that my Grandma and her sister had two more sisters, which is fantastic news, but theres a but coming on but the free BMD it has different surnames for the mother, which sounds more like they are half sisters to the other two but the dates dont tally up correctly, I will write the information below for help

Betty Parrington ( my nan ) b 1923 COOK
Mona Parrington b 1921 COOK

The two sisters I have just found out about goes

Susannah Parrington b 1928 NUTTALL
Hilda Parrington b 1930 NUTTALL

Ive looked up a marriage for Mary Cook and found that she married a Edward Nuttall in June 1912.

So whats puzzling me is that she was Nuttall when Betty and Mona was born... or am I wrong..

I am 99 % psitive that Richard Parrington was my great grandfather as it is a family name....

I can recall my father mentioning a Hilda when I was younger when my father and gran used to talk, which Im sure they said she died in a house fire.. but you cant rely on childhood memories to be total proof.

I beleive that Susannah was called Hampson too( might be married name)

maybe it depended on who registered their births and how the registrar phrased the question

eg

mother's maiden name; ans = Cook

mother's former name: ans = Nuttall

so could well be all Richard & Mary's children

Birth certificate of one of the later ones should have mother = Mary Elizabeth formerly Cook late Nuttall

Just nudging this up with information I found coz I cant still wangle it , just been messaging a relative Ive just found and asked her if she knnew her grandmas maiden name she said no but, she said she always thought her mother was called Nuttall?? The relative in question is Mona Parringtons daughter, but on scripts ive viewed it says her mother was cook???

Ive found a another marriage too Cook/parrington 1919 sept

and as below edward nuttall/cook june 1912

Do you think I should sack this one off its too confusing

theres an edward nuttall died in 1914 wondering why diff names on diff transcribes this might have been marys first marriage but it doesnt tally why they put nuttall instead off cook on the last two girls birth trans, would rather let a person have a look who knows what they are doing

That 1919 marriage shows that Mary had been married before she married Richard as it shows the same marriage with 2 names for Mary, which is the frequent way of recording in the indices when it is a second marriage. She was there fore born Nuttall and married a Cook or born Cook and married a Nuttall.


If you get your grandmothers birth cert it would prove this.

As I said before it is not uncommon for mmn to be shown as either maiden name or former married name. It often depended on who registered the birth.

Also you say

does that mean you do not trust the info given by other GR people - it seemed as though you are saying Dea does not have the experience, which is v wide of the mark. She has helped (accurately) a great number of people on this site

Two surnames can also appear on the marriage index if the bride's father has a different surname to the bride.

Sorry if the way I posted sounded offensive, I didn't mean it like that , I meant Id rather get someone to look into it that knows what they are doing rather than me messing up...( as I have done more than once in the past )

I think really I should ask one of the family if they have my grans birth cert, that should do the trick, I thought Id have a go myself, but as you say different registrars wrote different things on certs them days, the awkward sods ...

Glad to hear I mis-interpreted your comments and apologise again. Put it down to me actually being away on holiday and probably had a little alcohol so was not thinking clearly.

touring up east coast of Scotland then a week on Mull & 2 nights lake District - with the sun following us around even though it was chilly. Very relaxing - all I had to do was map read and bird/otter spot - no cooking for 2 weeks! Thanks for asking. Back to normal now (after catching up with all the paperwork than landed through the letterbox)
