Pettitt-Property BEESTONS in 1543 consisted of holdings approx.20 acres each.Three in Warbleton sussex called Hoathes,Gibbes and Penkehurst which had house and buildings.4th holding called Horam in Herstmonceaux sussex. Penkehurst can be traced back to 13th cen.in 1296 Galfro de Penghurst recorded liable for tax in warbleton to support wars of Edward I. 20th June 1544 tenements had been held "for a long time"by Robert Petit and his predecessors established by record of Manor court. They were held at the will of the Lord of the manor of warbleton at this time was Richard Puttenham of Shreevell upon Bordon in Hampshire. In the 1524 subsidy Robert Petits land was assessed at £1.At a manor court april 3rd 1543 these lands which had been copyhold were freed by the Lord.Robert Petit did fealty for them.1583 John Pettyt now yeoman granted the holdings in payment for mortgage to Richard Crayne of Craille in warbleton,John Hayle of middlesex,Thomas Stollion of warbleton and Thomas Ellys of Burwash. The Petits had connections with Woodman and Thomas Stollion who now controlled the iron works previously owned by the protestant Martyr Richard Woodman. The morgaged property was to continue to be used by John Pettyt and this right to his son and heir Robert or in the event of this sons death to his brothers successively.John Pettyt had a large family and the names of his other sons are listed as-John,Thomas,Stollion,Timothy,Paul,Silas and Jacob. By 1613 the mortgage seems to have been paid off and the four tenements had become the property of Robert Pettyt the elder brother of John,Timothy etc.. In 1615 Robert Pettit also had the use of another property in warbleton called `Tombeckworth`,this propeerty had belonged to Thomas Stollion an ironmaster and was close to Marklye Furnace in Rushlake Green sussex.Robert died chidless in March 1620,his will, proved March 11th 1620 he left all his land in warbleton and Herstmonceaux to his wife Joane for her life. After her death it was to pass to his nephews John and Thomas Pettitt the sons of his brother John. And so the property became divided. In 1635 Thomas now a yeoman of Laughton sold his share to Nicholas Durrant of Framfield. In 1637 John now at Berwick sold his share to Robert Adams of Alfriston. The holding called Horam in Herstmonceaux was sold to Mr.Rightbridge.
