Hi I have wedding certificate of Edith Pitcher married to Alfred Alexander Hampton, 7 aug 1898. It says that her father William Pitcher was deceased at the time of the marriage.

I know that she was born in Shipdham, Norfolk. On searching the census I found a family - father William, mother Martha and on 1881 census Edith appears age 2., and also on 1891 census. They moved to London as the marriage took place at Clerkenwell. However, when I did another search for martha in 1901 I find that she is living in London and so is William - he should be dead by now as it says he was dec on wedding cert of Edith. Help. Am I looking at the wrong family? I have tried relooking but keep coming up with the same findings. Could this be a mistake on the wedding certificate and that he was actually still alive at the time?

Anyone looking at this family tree and found a better answer than mine I would love to hear from you.

Was she 21 or over at the time of the marriage?

She may have lied about her age and therefore lied about her father being dead to explain his absence at the wedding?

She may have fallen out with her father/family and therefore put him down as deceased to explain his absence etc?

Who were the witnesses? Were they her family or Alfred's family or maybe complete strangers?

Hi

Her age is down as 19 and the witnesses are a William Pitcher (I am assuming this is her brother if her father was deceased) and the other witness is her husbands sister,so it all looks above board. I did wonder if she had fallen out with anyone too. No way of knowing.

the addresses that groom and bride lived at were a couple of doors away in the same street so I am guessing that family were all close.

Hi Tania

Yes thats the same family that I found - my problem is if you follow them through to 1901 William is still alive but according to the wedding cert he was dead before 1898. How can that be?

Wow, you guys are quick with the answers! I am running backwards and forwards from kitchen to computer - I am preparing a beef stew!

Thanks for all the stuff you have found so far. It would appear that maybe William wasn't dead at the time of the wedding - could have been a mistake on who ever was filling in the form or maybe he just wasnt there.

Anyway, how do I go about getting a baptism check? Where do I go for one of those - is it done online?

Yes thanks - I HAVE been looking but I can find no more!

I can think of no other explanation.

I will have another look after Dinner but don't think I will find anything - sorry!

Hi Dea

Thanks for all your help. Really do appreciate it.

I shall also continue after dinner, will probably just have to put it down to human error or family arguments!
