Find Ancestors

Hi,

Trying to find any information on Jane Elizabeth Powell born about 1870/1872,

estimated date as they are on the 1881 census with Jane being 11.
but free bmd states she was born 1872, and her sister Ada is stated as being 7 on the 1881 census but was born 1871 on freebmd.

St Pancras/Middlesex area parents George and Mary.


any help would be appreciated.

would you think it is possible that Ada and her sister Jane have there birth dates around the wrong way as Ada should have been born in 1870? which would have made her 11 in 1881.
any sign of them further back?

Hiya. I've noticed a couple of your threads in the last couple of days, but can't find them now. (Maybe you're one of those deleters I can never for the life of me understand?)

What I'm thinking though is: surely someone has pointed out that you need to give a little more information about what you are looking for!

Specifically: do you want to know what happened to her after she was born? or who her family was before she was born?

Is that really all the information you have? Where is it from? Why the approx birthdate? Have you looked for her birth at FreeBMD? The only Jane Elizabeth Powell I see born anywhere in the vicinity 1868-1875 was 1872 in Camberwell.

I don't see a Jane or Elizabeth Powell born 1869-1873 in the 1881 census with those parents.

Might she have been living with a grandmother?

There's an Elizabeth A Powell with parents George and Mary, born c1869. And an Elizabeth J. Powell with parents George and Annie born c1870.

Do you know her mother's birth surname, her parents' approx dates and places of birth? Any of that could help find them in censuses etc.

It is very unlikely that birthdates would be switched.

Children were listed in order of age, so there would not be much opportunity for switching.

Hi, I have a Jane Powell on a 1901 Canadian census born England March 01, 1870. Immigrated 1891.
She is married in Canada to William Thomas Corby has five children, died giving birth 1901.

Curious -- where is she in 1901, and how do you know she was Powell if she was Corby in 1901?? On the death record?

I have not deleted my other threads,
I am looking for any information, to build a bigger picture that includes her family before and after Jane was born.
There is a Jane Elizabeth Powell with those parents in 1881 with her parents George and Mary in 1881, as Seaham Lass had found on an answer before yours.
I gave as much information as i had at the time.

I have got a hot match this morning and with the info i have from there and free bmd this is what i have.

George Powell born 1859 Bloomsbury Holborn Middlesex.
Ada born 3, Wakefield St, St Pancras 1871 ,
this is from her birth certificate i have received this morning
states parents George Powell Silhograhic Printer, Mary Ann Wilson.
Jane Powell 1872 either Clerkenwell (what the hot match has) or Camberwell as freebmd.

They dont seem to be on a census other then 1881,

and there seems to be a big gap in children with George being born 1859, and his sister not born until 1871,
were there more siblings.

any help would be great.

With the big gap in children's births, it could be a 2nd marriage for one of them.

Can't find them in 1871 or earlier so perhaps the older children are Mary's from a previous marriage and under a different surname.

You said the birth cert has father as Stilographic printer, wasn't your Ada's father a wharehouseman?

its states him as a stilographic printer on Adas birth certifcate,
but as a Warehouseman on her Marriage certificate,1888.
probably changed career.

I've found them in 1871.

Jane's age must have been more or less correct in 1881 but Ada's wrong.

thank you very much,
noticed there are more childrens names then i have on my tree,
also his wife is Mary D in 1871 and i have Mary Ann Powell (Wilson) born Norwood, Surrey. and a lot of the children seem to be born in Soho. Ada i have was born in St Pancras, George in Bloomsbury, Holborn, Middlesex and Jane in Camberwell or Clerkenwell, Middlesex.
Beginining to think maybe he was married before.
Hope there are not 2 familys with similar names?
Need to get back to the 1861 census etc now.

It's definitely the same family as all the children are the same as in 1881 and they are living at 3, Wakefield St.

I made a mistake with birthplaces, they are all just Middlesex, which is what George's should read and have now edited them out.

Mary D should read Mary A, just been transcribed wrong.

Seems to be some confusion in where George is born as i have him born in Bloomsbury, Holborn, Middlesex , which also ties in with freebmd, and the 1871 census has Micheldever, Hampshire which is 56 miles away.
and george jnr born at soho and i have the same as George snr.

I said in my post above that they all just say born Middlesex, it has been mistranscribed as Micheldelver, I'm sure the image is just Middlesex.
