Margaret: "thanks for taking notice of my appeal, but can you please enlighten me as to how all this information is going to help me to track down Mr. Rees?"

I don't know what the info was since it's now gone, but people don't usually post info if they don't think it might be helpful, even if the reason isn't immediately apparent. You might find that your response isn't the kind most likely to elicit help in future, and might consider it wise to delete your posts in which you address the poster in question, whose posts are no longer here.

(I notice that I've referred to a poster by name whose post is now properly deleted as well, so I'm going to do an edit.)

I'll bet it's been suggested / you've already tried, but have you looked at forcesreunited.org.uk? I think you might have to sign up under some false pretence in order to search. ;)

Thank you for taking the trouble to research a list of births in the relevant area for me. If I could find out whether one of them was the Evan Rees I am looking for then that would be marvellous.
What I really need is, as you say, information from his service records. This would give a lot of relevant information, but this avenue of enquiry is closed to me under the Data Protection Act.
Therefore, I have to hope to be able to tap into the memories of anyone out there who might know of him in their family.

The name of the person I am looking for is Evan Rees and the only way I can continue my research is if anybody out there knows of anyone of this name who was in the Fleet Air Arm at this time - the early 1940s.

In respect of the deletions; there was some personal information offered to me earlier but I asked the poster to delete it. Some other stuff, I could see, was not going to lead me anywhere so that, too was deleted by the poster and I deleted my part relevant to that bit of the thread.

A long string of "deleted"s can, indeed, be frustrating to all. It's a pity the system leaves them in.

Because of the lack of details its going to be hard..... you have to go with rumour and to eliminate these. You say he might have been from Port Talbot area. Well this sits in between two registration districts. Neath and Swansea. These are possible births for both.

Births Dec 1915 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rees Evan M Morgan Neath 11a 1725

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1916 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rees Evan G Davies Neath 11a 1813

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Mar 1922 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rees Evan D T Davies Neath 11a 2103

Births Jun 1915 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rees Evan J Davies Swansea 11a 2240

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Mar 1918 (99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rees Evan J Rees Swansea 11a 2067

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Jun 1920 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rees Evan T Morgan Swansea 11a 2531

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Mar 1922 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rees Evan I Evans Swansea 11a 2405
Rees Evan J Thomas Swansea 11a 2286

it is about eliminating each one until you find the right person which is going to take a long time. Unless you can find other documentation on him from his military records.

starr!

Only you can delete what you post. I could not have done it as I did not put the post in. Thank you for the information anyway, but I could not see its relevance in tracing Evan Rees.

I tried this site but all the online info that I could possibly have searched is unaccessible due to staffing shortages and other priorities.

Thanks anyway for the suggestion.

Does anyone know how, online, I can find a list of builders firms that were in Gloucester in the late 1930s / early 1940s?

You could always try the Fleet Air Arm museum at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset. It's possible that they might have records of FAA personnel of that period, or at least tell you where those records may be kept now.

FAA Museum
RNAS Yeovilton

If you google the museum, there is an e-mail address, and a search facility for finding personnel. Worth a try anyway.

Joy,

Regarding the Navy News, my problem there would be that I have, so far, no means of knowing for definite whether or not he is deceased. Your offer of doing a bit of research in the relevant local area is much appreciated

I'm really concerned and I've asked the poster to delete the info.

I don't think any of us would want our name, address and telephone number posted on an internet discussion board!

So just for future ref, that's a really unwise thing to do (and of course is against GR rules), and we all need to think about the personal safety of both ourselves and others when it comes to identifying info like that.

John. The d.o.b. I have is a "guesstimate" - based on what I imagine his age might have been when he was recuited into the FAA. I'm guessing around about the mid-20s but he might have been older or younger. I'm trawling around for a start point where someone thinks "yes, I know who he is / was.

Hello Margaret,
I had a quick look through a couple of sites and found 2 Evan Rees
Both died in 1960 and were recorded in Llanelly, Camarthenshire in the Apr-June Qtr.
Evan Rees age 77 Volume 8 page 303
Evan D Rees age 59 Volume 8 page 286

Don't know if this is relevant but you didn't give much info as to birth dates or approximate age. Also his relationship to you may have been helpful
There will surely be military records that are accessible to you.
I hope this helps a little.
John
